Freddie Mac buys home and apartment loans from banks, credit unions and other lenders so they have fresh money to keep lending to American homebuyers and renters. Congress created it to bring liquidity, stability and affordability to the U.S. housing market, and it sits with Fannie Mae at the center of the country's mortgage system. It never lends to borrowers directly; instead it purchases loans that meet its standards, pools them into mortgage-backed securities sold to investors worldwide, and guarantees the payments. It earns money from guarantee fees and interest on the loans it holds. Freddie Mac was chartered in 1970 and is based in McLean, Virginia.
