MIO Partners manages retirement and after-tax investments for McKinsey employees and alumni, offering funds already available in the McKinsey retirement plan and access to additional alternative investments. It administers and oversees these investment funds on an at-cost basis, so neither MIO nor McKinsey earns a profit from the investments. Investors choose from funds within the plan or related alternatives, and MIO’s governance is aligned with investors through significant participation in the funds. The goal is to provide convenient, time-saving investment options and professional management at low cost, with incentives that match those of the investors.

Simplify's Take

What believers are saying

  • Neuberger announced the MIO acquisition on February 10, 2026, validating MIO’s franchise.
  • The deal should widen distribution for MIO’s strategies across Neuberger’s public and private markets platform.
  • MIO’s $26B AUM and $20B alternatives business remain attractive to institutional buyers and hires.

What critics are saying

  • Neuberger’s 2026 acquisition can close only after client consent and regulatory approvals.
  • MIO’s 2021 SEC case exposed compliance failures handling McKinsey deal-sensitive information.
  • After Neuberger closes, MIO risks losing McKinsey exclusivity, triggering talent departures and mandate attrition.

What makes MIO Partners unique

  • MIO’s $20B alternatives platform and Special Situations strategy differentiate it from passive wealth managers.
  • McKinsey’s captive client base gives MIO durable, low-churn assets from partners, employees, and alumni.
  • Its at-cost model and partner co-investment align incentives better than typical fee-driven managers.
