Requirements
- A City of Omaha Journeyman license is required.
- Advanced knowledge of basic carpentry, gas piping, electricity, and air flow is required.
- A valid driver's license is required.
- A working knowledge of local codes and general industry standards is required.
Responsibilities
- Perform or be capable of performing all four stages of HVAC installation in new construction, including marking and measuring HVAC systems, installing piping and drain lines, preparing and installing ductwork, setting units, wiring, finishing, and startup.
- Apply journeyman-level technical skills and general knowledge of current industry codes, regulations, and standards to ensure complete, quality installations that meet inspection code.
- Review blueprints and mark locations for HVAC systems in new construction, identifying air returns, chimney locations, and bath fans.
- Interface with builders, contractors, homeowners, architects, building inspectors, and project managers to identify installation needs before laying out duct configurations and receive changes during installation.
- Measure and determine duct sizing for proper airflow, request the proper amounts of duct and fittings, and cut ductwork to meet site requirements.
- Install copper piping and drain lines below slab level as appropriate.
- Install chimneys and roof flashing, ensuring flashing is sealed against water leaks.
- Cut holes with saws according to markouts as needed for HVAC installation.
- Install bath exhausts by running pipe from the bath to outside; set up return air systems from the main floor upward; and install hood vents and zone damper systems.
- Assemble HVAC units and condensers and place or install air boxes, registers, thermostats, coils, air handlers, heat pumps, copper line sets, and risers.
- Stretch and lay out ductwork before installation to ensure layout accuracy; modify existing space or build unit platforms when needed, ensuring platforms can carry the weight of the unit and technician.
- Read layout prints and install duct or flex systems and equipment according to job requirements; wrap and seal duct with insulation as needed; secure duct and place company stickers on installed equipment.
- Install refrigerant lines, fans, appliance vents, smoke detectors, humidifiers, and grills; braze refrigerant lines, pressurize with nitrogen, and evacuate refrigerant from units as required.
- Test equipment by releasing the unit charge, starting the unit, and checking pressures with gauges to ensure proper operation.
- Connect indoor and outdoor units with copper tubing using high-temperature soldering.
- Set drain pans to meet drop flow rates and install and test drain lines.
- Wire the unit's main power line and ensure high- and low-voltage connections are secure.
- Start up HVAC systems in new construction and verify operation in heating and cooling cycles; record HVAC data including model and serial numbers, heater and compressor amperage, and pressures.
- Ensure installations are accurate and serviceable and that materials and workmanship meet applicable technical and safety standards and regulatory codes; make modifications needed for proper installation and air balance.
- Provide on-the-job training and support to assigned apprentice helpers.
