Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development credential is required.
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record is required.
  • The employee must demonstrate knowledge of structures maintenance.
  • The employee must practice safe work methods and recognize hazards in routine and non-routine tasks, making adjustments to avoid loss, injury, or accidents.
  • The employee must wear personal protective equipment appropriate to the job.
  • The employee must be able to cooperate and communicate with coworkers and supervisors.
  • The employee must perform basic mathematical functions, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, proportions, percentages, and measurements, and understand written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • The employee must read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • The employee must respond 24 hours a day to after-hours emergency calls necessitated by accidents or bridge malfunctions.
  • The employee must be able to stand, sit, walk on a wide range of surfaces, use hands and fingers, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, and hear.
  • The employee must lift up to 50 pounds unassisted and use manual and powered pneumatic, hydraulic, gas, and electric tools and equipment.
  • The employee must have close and distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must work in outside weather conditions, wet or humid conditions, high precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moderate to high noise levels, and tight spaces.
  • The employee must be comfortable working in and around water and from boats.
Responsibilities
  • Maintain and repair highway structures, including concrete, structural steel, welding, expansion joints, carpentry, and painting.
  • Create safe Maintenance of Traffic control by setting up and removing traffic-control devices, including cones, message and arrow boards, and temporary signage.
  • Work from heights using bucket trucks, snooper trucks, scaffolding, ladders, and aerial platform lifts.
  • Repair and maintain bridge and culvert slopes, berms, drains, and related features using shovels and other hand or power tools and equipment.
  • Control vegetation appearance and growth using lawn-mowing equipment, hand or power trimmers, chemical sprayers, and other methods.
  • Maintain the appearance and functionality of bridge fender systems, including navigational signs, lighting, and structural fender-system elements.
  • Transport crew and equipment to work sites by operating large trucks, specialized motor vehicles, and trailers.
  • Be available for emergency-response rotations, including overtime, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • One year of work experience in construction, maintenance, and repair is preferred.
  • A commercial driver's license, Department of Transportation certifications, electrical certifications, and welding certifications are highly desirable.
