About the company

Deep Sky builds infrastructure to scale CO2 removal using direct air capture and ocean capture, storing the CO2 underground in Quebec with the help of local clean energy and geology. DAC and ocean devices collect CO2 from air and seawater, and the gas is permanently sequestered to create verifiable carbon removals. The company differentiates itself by emphasizing durable, scalable Scope 3 removals, working with government bodies, communities, and partner capture firms to deploy large facilities powered by Quebec’s clean energy. Its goal is to provide long-term, verifiable carbon offsets for the next 150 years to help governments and companies meet climate goals.

Alberta's Smith at the Canada Investment Summit seeks backing for 34 major projects.

Alberta's Smith at the Canada Investment Summit seeks backing for 34 major projects. Updated: September 14, 2026 at 6:31p.m. EDT Published: September 14, 2026 at 5:56p.m. EDT Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is in Toronto this week for the first Canada Investment Summit with plans to get backing for 34 major projects, each worth $200 million or more. But with the referendum nearly a month away, some say that investors may be looking elsewhere for the time being. "Anytime we're seeing a certain level of uncertainty in the market, and when it comes to investment, investment will go where their dollars are safe," said Heather Thomson, vice-president of economy and engagement at the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce. "When there is political instability or if there is talk of a referendum, that money will stop." Meanwhile, Yves Giroux, a C.D. Howe Institute fellow, says investors have been looking at polling that suggests more Albertans want to remain in Canada. "Most of the advantages would still be there, at least for the foreseeable future. Oil and gas will remain there," Giroux told CTV News Edmonton. Jason Vanderheyden, vice-president of government affairs and policy at Deep Sky, is seeking $350 million to build the company's second carbon capture and sequestration facility in Alberta. "Alberta is top of mind for many of those in the investment community, and we're seeing a lot of enthusiasm, especially as it relates to the regulatory environment that the province has to offer and the conditions for growing not just our sector but others," said Vanderheyden. "We're really encouraged at the very positive and optimistic view that investors have on Alberta specifically." During CTV Question Period, Smith said she is not worried that the referendum will scare potential investors away. "We will have an answer from Albertans on Oct. 19 and then we will have the next months and years to be able to land some of those decisions and investments," said Smith. "In the case of Alberta, it's not a nail-biter." The Canada Investment Summit ends Tuesday. With files from CTV News Edmonton's Chelan Skulski

Deep Sky delivers North America's first certified direct air capture carbon removal credits

Deep Sky and Isometric have issued North America's first certified direct air capture carbon removal credits from Deep Sky Alpha in Alberta, Canada. The credits, delivered to Microsoft and Royal Bank of Canada, are also the world's first to carry the Core Carbon Principles label. Deep Sky Alpha, located in Innisfail, Alberta, permanently injected its first tonnes of atmospheric carbon dioxide underground within 18 months of beginning construction. The facility achieved milestones on schedule and on budget from design in autumn 2024 to commissioning in summer 2025. The credits were certified under Isometric's Direct Air Capture Protocol, which requires full accounting of project emissions and long-term monitoring for safe, permanent storage. Montreal-based Deep Sky has raised $130 million in funding and recently announced partnerships with Lufthansa Group, ENGIE and TD Bank Group.

SMBC invests in Deep Sky to accelerate Direct Air Capture market in Japan

Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation has made a strategic investment in Montreal-based carbon removal developer Deep Sky Corporation to accelerate direct air capture technology deployment in Japan. Financial terms were not disclosed. Deep Sky, led by CEO Alexandra Petre, operates as a tech-agnostic project developer extracting atmospheric carbon dioxide for permanent underground storage. The company has raised $130 million to date from investors including Investissement Québec, Brightspark Ventures, OMERS Ventures, Breakthrough Energy Catalyst and BMO. The investment was executed through SMBC's Social Value Creation Investment Fund and builds upon a memorandum of understanding signed in December 2025. SMBC aims to help Japanese corporate clients secure high-quality carbon removal credits and build commercial infrastructure connecting buyers with global project developers. The agreement was finalised in Tokyo during Canada's Team Canada Trade Mission to Japan.

Montréal's Deep Sky partners with French energy company ENGIE.

Montréal's Deep Sky partners with French energy company ENGIE. Under the partnership, ENGIE will purchase carbon removal credits, collaborate on research and development. A Montréal-based carbon removal company with a significant footprint in Alberta announced today a strategic partnership with French energy multinational ENGIE. Deep Sky develops large-scale, direct-air carbon removal and storage projects, including its first flagship facility, Deep Sky Alpha, in Innisfail, Alta., just south of Red Deer, which was backed by funding from Bill Gates' climate fund. Direct air capture (DAC) technology uses various methods to extract carbon directly from ambient air. Deep Sky describes itself as "technologically agnostic," meaning its DAC facilities deploy, test, and scale multiple methods to achieve carbon removal, typically through partnerships with capture-technology providers. ENGIE, based in the Paris metropolitan area, is a global energy utility involved in producing electricity as well as managing infrastructure that supports the delivery of that energy. The company has been forthright about its interest in transitioning to more sustainable energy sources and in reducing emissions. "Partnerships like this help ensure direct air capture can meet growing market demand." Charlie Renzoni, Deep Sky Under the agreement, ENGIE will purchase up to 15,000 carbon removal credits from Deep Sky, with those credits being generated at facilities like Deep Sky Alpha. The company was unable to disclose the market value of that purchase. The two companies will also collaborate on research and market development around direct air capture, seeking to inform future commercial-scale DAC deployments. In a statement released today, Deep Sky said that the partnership supports ENGIE's efforts toward decarbonization, while also contributing to growth within the broader carbon removal economy. "ENGIE, with its commitment to net zero by 2045, aligns with the urgency of climate timelines outlined by the [Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change] and reflects the kind of leadership needed to scale the carbon removal market," said Charlie Renzoni, vice president of carbon markets at Deep Sky, in a statement released this morning. "Partnerships like this help ensure direct air capture can meet growing market demand by bridging the gap between innovation and industrial-scale deployment."
