At Shelter, we do not require a previous background in the insurance industry. While the experience is a plus, it is far from a necessity. Around half of our new Shelter Agents have never worked in insurance; our agents have backgrounds ranging from real estate and retail sales to education and coaching.
What is required? A motivated attitude, an entrepreneurial spirit, and skilled capacity for effectively communicating with clients in a sales atmosphere.
While some sales experience & a degree with general business courses is helpful, our mix of in-house and virtual new agent training schools, paired with continuing industry education courses, helps you build the foundation necessary to launch your agency.
At Shelter we do not require prospective agents to have capital/assets on hand to be considered for an agency. We do not “sell” agencies and Shelter does not “loan” money to agents to begin their business. We provide the opportunity. The only expectations are that you meet sufficient sales requirements and core business proficiencies. If you are no longer a Shelter agent for any reason, your financial responsibilities are limited to any unsatisfied bills owed through your departure. This could include advertising contracts, telephone bills, and utilities.
A true business owner’s mindset is required to succeed! While developing prospects and selling Shelter products in your agency will be your main focus, you may also have the opportunity to bring on staff to help you perform general administrative duties and improve your sales.

Shelter Insurance taps One Inc to digitise payments. September 23, 2026 One Inc, a payments network built specifically for the insurance sector, has been chosen by Shelter Insurance Companies to overhaul how the carrier's customers pay premiums and receive claims. Shelter will deploy One Inc's ClaimsPay(R) and PremiumPay(R) products, bringing money coming in and money going out onto a single platform. The move is designed to centralise the insurer's payment operations and give its policyholders an end-to-end digital experience. Through the arrangement, Shelter customers will gain access to a broad mix of digital payment methods, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal and Venmo, with bank accounts and debit cards still available. One Inc can also handle intricate transactions involving several parties, such as payments to lienholders and mortgagees. Shelter said this capability was essential for its needs. One Inc's ready-made integrations link to modern core systems, providing cloud-based connectivity across policy administration, billing and claims. The company says this approach removes isolated pockets of data and makes treasury work simpler by consolidating reconciliation into one environment. Shelter will also be able to tap One Inc's network of more than 1.3 million vendors, spanning auto, legal and medical providers. According to One Inc, each new connection adds value for every member of the network, which in turn speeds up the move to digital payments. Established in 1946, Shelter and its subsidiaries offer home and auto cover via a network of over 2,000 agents operating in 20 states. The insurer had been looking for a payments setup that could make life easier for customers while also bringing its treasury functions together. One Inc serves more than 320 insurance carriers and focuses exclusively on the insurance market. Its platform aims to lower costs, strengthen security and improve the customer experience, offering varied payment options, communication across multiple channels and rapid claims settlement, including for complicated cases.
