Eversource approves $600M NCD issue and names CFO as director to fund grid upgrades

Eversource Energy's board approved a private placement of rated, listed non-convertible debentures (NCDs) of up to ₹5,000 crore on October 28, 2026. It also sanctioned a pre-approved limit of ₹6,000 crore for future financing. The company plans to spend the money on grid expansion to connect renewable generation to its transmission network. That includes upgrading substations, deploying smart-grid technology, and adding battery storage. The board also appointed chief financial officer Chandrasekaran Prabhakaran as an additional director and whole-time director for finance. The move awaits shareholder approval. Eversource also released unaudited consolidated results for the quarter and half-year ending September 30, 2026. The statutory auditor's limited-review report found no material misstatement.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong vows to fight Eversource's appeal over regulators' denial of more than $300 million in storm-cost interest.

Connecticut Attorney General William Tong vows to fight Eversource's appeal over regulators' denial of more than $300 million in storm-cost interest. Connecticut Attorney General William Tong vowed Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, to aggressively defend a state regulatory decision rejecting more than $300 million in interest payments sought by Eversource for storm restoration costs. Tong said the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority's denial was necessary because the interest charges were "outrageous, unaffordable, and unjustified," and ratepayers should not bear costs on unapproved expenses. Eversource filed a lawsuit on Oct. 15 in New Britain Superior Court challenging the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority's decision to cut more than $500 million from the utility's storm-cost reimbursement, including the rejection of over $300 million in carrying charges or interest on storm restoration expenses incurred between 2018 and 2023, according to court documents and statements from the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). The utility contends PURA ignored state law and precedent by denying interest on costs it financed while awaiting regulatory approval, arguing it is entitled to recoup these carrying costs. Eversource also disputes PURA's reduction of roughly $7.7 million in crew costs, which the company says was based on faulty methodology, according to a spokeswoman, Jamie Ratliff. The final PURA decision, issued July 29, 2026, approved $861 million in deferred storm costs but disallowed roughly $500 million of Eversource's request. Attorney General William Tong said the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority's denial of the interest charges was justified because the costs were "outrageous, unaffordable, and unjustified," and that ratepayers should not be responsible for interest on expenses that had not been vetted or approved. Tong said the fight centers on "hundreds of millions of dollars in unjustified interest payments for years where they had never even asked for recovery," calling the July 29 PURA decision approving approximately $861 million in deferred storm costs while rejecting retrospective carrying charges "an important victory for Connecticut ratepayers." Tong pledged to continue scrutinizing "every dollar Eversource requests from ratepayers, including in its upcoming rate case," according to a statement from his office. This included more than $100 million in principal storm expenses and $397 million in retroactive carrying charges, records show. The approved amount was further reduced by approximately $91 million already paid by customers for storms, $2.1 million in mutual aid revenue, and a $100 million ratepayer-funded credit authorized in an April 22 decision. The total amount to be collected from customers is $668 million plus applicable going-forward carrying charges, according to PURA filings. The dispute dates back to Dec. 15, 2025, when Eversource sought PURA approval to recover nearly $1 billion in projected storm costs plus over $300 million in associated interest payments. Tong filed a brief on April 29, 2026, urging PURA to reject the interest payments as "premature, unprecedented and should be rejected." In June 2026, PURA issued a draft decision approving $933 million in storm costs but rejecting carrying costs entirely, aligning with the Office of the Attorney General's position. The final decision in late July reduced the approved amount to $861 million, excluding the carrying charges. The Office of Consumer Counsel (OCC) also raised concerns during the regulatory review, citing issues with external contractor costs, improper storms included for recovery, pre-staging costs, inadequate documentation, and misapplication of mileage standards. OCC recommended PURA reduce Eversource's request by 50%, approving no more than $689.5 million, or as little as $484.5 million if existing storm reserves were applied, according to OCC filings. Consumer Counsel Claire Coleman criticized Eversource's ongoing legal challenges, saying the company is "grasping in court and before PURA" and pursuing "meritless appeals" that subject ratepayers to an "endless cycle of financial demands and litigation." Coleman accused the utility of prioritizing financial recovery over accepting the outcome of a three-year regulatory review. Eversource's legal challenge also highlights delays in the regulatory process. The utility filed 74 motions for extensions of time to respond to discovery requests, resulting in more than 1,000 days of delay, according to statements from the Attorney General's office. Tong said Eversource "expressed outrage at the process" rather than addressing the questions promptly. Assistant Attorneys General Caroline McCormack, John Wright, and Deputy Associate Attorney General Michael Wertheimer are assisting Tong in defending the PURA decision. A spokesperson for PURA declined to comment on the appeal. Since taking office, Tong has blocked upwards of $1 billion in requested rate hikes from gas, electric, and water companies owned by both Eversource and United Illuminating, according to his office. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine whether Eversource can recover the disputed carrying charges and additional storm costs, potentially affecting future rate cases and regulatory oversight of utility storm cost recovery in Connecticut.

Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering selected for U.S. Department of Energy SPARK Award to expand grid capacity and deliver customer benefits through grid-enhancing technology.

Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering selected for U.S. Department of Energy SPARK Award to expand grid capacity and deliver customer benefits through grid-enhancing technology. Selection for award negotiations marks important step forward for initiative that will help increase transmission capacity, improve reliability and reduce customer costs by maximizing existing infrastructure. MANCHESTER, N.H., Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) - Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Electricity (OE) under its Speed to Power (SPARK) program for an innovative initiative designed to improve reliability and keep costs as low as possible for customers. Referred to as the Dynamic Rating Enhancement Advancements and Modernization (DREAM) initiative, the collaboration between Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering will leverage grid-enhancing technologies to increase the capacity of the existing electric grid, enhance system resiliency, and help lower costs for customers. As developed by Eversource and Professor Junbo Zhao's team at Dartmouth, the DREAM initiative combines leading-edge research with utility expertise to advance practical solutions for the electric grid. By deploying dynamic line rating (DLR) technology across approximately 4,000 miles of Eversource's transmission network in Connecticut, Massachusetts and New Hampshire, the initiative will provide operators with enhanced real-time visibility into system conditions and enable more efficient use of existing infrastructure. It will also leverage thermal field sensing to provide on-the-ground measurements of actual conditions, advanced weather forecasting, digital analytical models and operational integration that supports the decision-making process for remote system operators - ultimately providing more real-time data that reflects actual operating conditions in order to maximize use of the existing transmission system. Inside Eversource's System Operations Center "We greatly appreciate the Department of Energy's investment in innovative solutions that can strengthen the New England electric grid and deliver significant reliability and affordability benefits to our customers," said Bill Quinlan, President of Transmission at Eversource. "As demand for electricity continues to grow, the DREAM initiative will help us maximize the capability of our existing transmission system - which importantly will also help keep costs as low as possible for customers. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with DOE and Dartmouth Engineering to demonstrate how advanced, state-of-the-art grid technologies can help meet the region's evolving energy needs with an ever-present focus on affordability for our customers." "Existing transmission lines can often carry more electricity than conventional ratings allow, but operators need reliable information about when that capacity is available and how to use it safely," said Junbo Zhao, Todd M. Cook and Elizabeth Donohoe Cook Associate Professor of Engineering at Dartmouth. "DREAM brings together sensing, forecasting and digital twin analytics to turn that opportunity into practical tools for grid operations. Our partnership with Eversource offers an opportunity to move research into practice across an entire transmission network, helping deliver a more reliable and affordable electric grid for communities throughout New England." "New England's geography, climate, and growing energy demand make reliable power delivery especially challenging. By pairing Dartmouth's advanced modeling with Eversource's operational knowledge, we can get more out of existing transmission lines and improve energy security for our region. This is a perfect example of how innovation moves from our labs to real-world impact," said Douglas Van Citters, Dean and Professor, Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth. By maximizing the capability of its existing transmission system, Eversource anticipates that - under specific conditions - the project could unlock additional transfer capability that may mitigate or delay the need to construct certain new transmission facilities. Such an approach is estimated to cost significantly less than what would be required to build equivalent new transmission infrastructure while also reducing congestion costs on constrained transmission corridors and creating additional value for customers. The partnership will continue as Eversource and Dartmouth Engineering will work with DOE through the award negotiation process to further develop and demonstrate how dynamic line rating technology can increase transmission capacity, strengthen reliability and support evolving energy demands across the region with an emphasis on affordability for customers. Pending successful negotiations and execution of a final award agreement, the award could represent approximately $47.7 million in funding for the initiative, which would be expected to begin in 2027. Eversource's DREAM initiative was one of 31 projects selected across 26 states.
