UBS lifts 2027 AI spending forecast to $1.4T, warns volatility is "new normal

UBS raised its forecasts for AI capital spending to $1 trillion for 2026 and $1.4 trillion for 2027, and added a $1.5 trillion estimate for 2028. It cited stronger spending commitments from major hyperscalers. The bank expects AI investment to keep supporting global equity returns in 2027. It warned, however, that higher volatility is likely to become the "new normal" as investors focus on monetisation, balance-sheet strength and returns. UBS sees selective project delays, repricing and consolidation as more likely than a broad collapse in spending. Neoclouds account for about 8% of estimated AI spending, against 80% for Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and SpaceX combined. It urged investors to "reduce overconcentration" and prefers industrials, health care and financials.

UBS move could put up to 12,000 Swiss jobs at risk, union warns

The Swiss Bank Employees Association (SBPV) has warned that up to 12,000 UBS jobs in Switzerland could be affected if tougher capital requirements push the bank to move its headquarters. In a letter to the WAK commission, obtained by NZZ am Sonntag, the union called for a "viable compromise" on capital rules. It said a relocation could threaten 10,000 to 12,000 of the bank's 34,000 Swiss jobs, on top of cuts already under way as UBS integrates Credit Suisse. UBS has cut about 20,000 roles worldwide since the acquisition. Chief executive Sergio Ermotti has said the integration will bring around 3,000 redundancies in Switzerland, largely through natural attrition, early retirement, and internal transfers. The WAK is due to assess capital requirements for UBS's foreign subsidiaries. The upper house proposed last month that the bank back them with 90% Common Equity Tier 1 capital. UBS is weighing options, including moving its headquarters or merging with another lender.
