Requirements
  • An associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technology is required.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by the ASCP Board of Certification or an equivalent certification is required.
  • At least one year of clinical experience is required.
  • External candidates must complete Path and Lab ICCE Career Ladder requirements within 90 days of starting the position.
  • Positive patient identification using two identifiers is required.
  • Proficiency in the electronic laboratory computer system and departmental middleware systems is required.
Responsibilities
  • Assess, receive, accession, process, and test samples to support high-quality laboratory patient results.
  • Maintain laboratory supplies and stock assigned benches at designated levels.
  • Prepare specimens for testing and evaluate specimen acceptability.
  • Perform specimen receipt and order evaluation in the electronic laboratory computer system.
  • Apply correct specimen labeling practices.
  • Perform routine laboratory testing using automated and non-automated methods according to established procedures.
  • Recognize normal and abnormal laboratory values and complete warranted notifications.
  • Recognize computer data problems and troubleshoot issues.
  • Communicate technical testing information to medical and lay persons.
  • Perform specimen processing, testing, and interpretation based on sample type and test.
  • Create and review test and specimen pending worklists.
  • Notify and document critical test results according to established policies.
  • Quality-control new reagent lots and shipments according to manufacturer procedures and laboratory protocols.
  • Order reagents at designated par levels.
  • Support test and instrument validation activities.
  • Perform and document quality control testing before reporting patient results.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, instruments, and results.
  • Document equipment problems and resolutions on equipment tracking logs or discrepancy forms and communicate them to the team.
  • Perform and document instrument maintenance according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Complete procedure, policy, competency, and competency documentation requirements using MediaLab.
  • Assist with the orientation and training of new staff, students, and residents and provide documentation or feedback.
  • Participate in continuing education.
  • Complete additional tasks assigned by the Director, Manager, Coordinator, or Team Leader.
