Anysphere develops software tools that integrate artificial intelligence into the programming process to increase developer productivity. Its primary product is Cursor, an AI-first code editor that allows users to generate large code changes with minimal effort and receive instant answers to technical questions about their codebase. Unlike traditional editors that treat AI as a secondary plugin, Anysphere builds its system from the ground up to create a hybrid human-AI workflow supported by a team of elite researchers and open-source contributors. The company's goal is to create a coding environment where writing bugs is nearly impossible and software iteration is effortless.

OpenAI has ended its partnership with Cursor, the AI coding tool recently acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion, citing concerns it cannot trust Elon Musk's company to adhere to its terms of service. The decision represents a significant financial loss, as Cursor was among OpenAI's top five customers by revenue at the start of 2026. OpenAI estimated Cursor would generate more than $1 billion in annualised revenue based on the partnership's spring performance, according to people familiar with the matter. The company stated it made the choice because it cannot be confident SpaceX will use its technology within service terms, based on experience with Musk's companies violating contracts. Cursor founder Michael Truell, now at SpaceX, responded that OpenAI's models serve only about 5% of Cursor user traffic. OpenAI's Thibault Sottiaux countered that token usage is not a proxy for revenue or value created.
OpenAI terminated its model supply agreement with Cursor on 28 August 2026, two weeks after SpaceX acquired Anysphere for $60 billion. The cut-off took effect on 12 November 2026. OpenAI cited trust concerns regarding Elon Musk's companies, referencing contract violations and allegations that xAI distilled OpenAI models. Musk dismissed the move, calling Sam Altman and Greg Brockman "untrustworthy". Anthropic is filling the gap, increasing compute capacity for Claude models on Cursor. Menlo Ventures data shows Anthropic holds 40% enterprise spend share versus OpenAI's 27%. Anthropic's Q2 2026 revenue reached $11.5 billion, surpassing OpenAI's $6.7 billion, with $8 billion from Claude Code. Anthropic targets an October 2026 IPO at a $965 billion valuation.
Cursor, the SpaceX subsidiary, has developed a new approach to managing Git at scale using object storage. The company built a Git-based repository service called Origin, powered by an internal engine named Continuity. Traditional Git architecture struggles with synchronisation at scale. GitHub's approach uses multiple tightly synchronised copies on NVMe disks, but synchronisation time increases with more replicas. AI agents have exacerbated these challenges by creating vast numbers of small, often throwaway repositories. Cursor's solution stores pushes in Amazon S3 as immutable objects in a write-ahead log, whilst simultaneously writing to a local NVMe repository. S3 serves as the source of truth, whilst local repositories act as warm caches for latency-sensitive operations. A beta of Origin is available with paid Cursor plans.
Cursor, now part of SpaceXAI, has launched Origin, a new code hosting platform designed to rival GitHub. The platform enables developers to collaborate on codebases, manage pull requests, and store repositories. Origin works alongside GitHub, allowing users to sync repositories between both platforms rather than forcing a complete switch. The launch comes amid mounting frustration over GitHub's reliability issues. The platform has experienced 257 outages over the past year, including a six-hour worldwide outage on the same day Origin launched. Despite these challenges, GitHub remains dominant with 180 million developers using the Microsoft-owned platform as of October. Cursor says "agent native" features and a broader app ecosystem will be added to Origin soon, though details remain limited.
How much did SpaceX pay for Cursor? $60 billion in SpaceX stock, per TechCrunch's August 15 report. Compare that to other major developer tool acquisitions: That's 8x what Microsoft paid for GitHub. Whether the premium reflects real conviction about where AI development is heading, or speculative pricing, is a question the industry hasn't settled. Does the acquisition change Cursor's pricing? No. Current plans as of August 2026: Existing subscriptions and enterprise agreements continue. Truell's team hasn't announced any pricing changes. Will Cursor still support Claude, GPT and gemini? Yes, for now. All current models are available as of August 19, 2026: The structural pressure here is worth understanding. Anthropic and Google currently rent GPU capacity from SpaceX's Colossus cluster. Every Cursor API call routed to Anthropic is revenue that leaves the SpaceX ecosystem. The team says nothing has changed. The economics say otherwise. It's also worth keeping in mind what SpaceX-adjacent tools have done with developer data before. Grok Build, xAI's coding assistant, was quietly uploading entire Git repositories to xAI storage - not just the files it actively read. SpaceX and xAI are separate entities, but both sit under Elon Musk's control. That context matters when evaluating data handling under the new ownership. What is the SpaceXAI-Cursor model? SpaceX and Anysphere are building a shared model on the Colossus GPU cluster, targeted at coding tasks where Claude Opus 4.8 currently leads. No release date has been announced. How it launches matters more than whether it launches. An optional addition to the model picker changes nothing for existing users. A forced default, or a quiet deprecation of third-party model access, changes everything. That product decision is what to watch in Q4 2026. What are the main Cursor alternatives in 2026? The AI coding editor market is moving fast. Meta entered the race in August with Muse Code, giving developers another independent option outside the Musk and Microsoft ecosystems. None are direct replacements today. Windsurf shows up most in threads about Cursor alternatives since the deal closed, partly because its model-agnostic positioning is exactly what's now uncertain about Cursor. Faq. Does the SpaceX acquisition affect Cursor's current functionality? Will Cursor drop Claude and GPT in favor of SpaceX's own model? What is Anysphere? Are the Cursor founders staying? Should I switch tools now? Why does SpaceX want a code editor? Rate the article! 1 ratings, avg: 5 Daria blaton.
