Momentum stocks: Buy APA and Riley Exploration, avoid RXO after its 45% surge

Three stocks trading near their 52-week highs get a mixed verdict in a new StockStory analysis: two to buy and one to avoid. The analysis advises selling RXO, a truckload and last-mile delivery provider whose shares rose 45% in a month. It cites declining unit sales over two years, a free cash flow margin that shrank 5.3 percentage points over five years, and limited cash reserves. At $28.38, the stock trades at 80.6x forward price-to-earnings (P/E). It favours APA Corporation, an oil and gas producer, at $47.68 a share and 8.7x forward P/E. APA has annual sales growth of 4.9% over ten years, revenue of $8.37 billion, and a 67.7% gross margin. Riley Exploration Permian also makes the buy list at $46.43 and 6.2x forward P/E. It posted 30.8% annual revenue growth over eight years and a 76.4% gross margin.

RXO's last-mile network is the sleeper in C.H. Robinson's $5.8B deal.

RXO's last-mile network is the sleeper in C.H. Robinson's $5.8B deal. October 5, 2026 1:41pm C.H. Robinson's $5.8 billion acquisition of RXO is about more than adding another freight brokerage operation to its third-party logistics (3PL) offering. It also gives the company a sizable last-mile business serving retailers and e-commerce companies, potentially extending its reach deeper into the journey from distribution center to doorstep. RXO arranges more than 11 million last-mile deliveries annually for omnichannel and e-commerce retailers, including same-day and next-day shipments and the transportation, assembly and installation of heavy goods such as furniture, appliances and mattresses. In its annual report, RXO described itself as "the largest provider of outsourced last-mile transportation for heavy goods in the U.S.," noting that it operates an asset-light service performed by third-party contractors. The scale of the addition is significant for C.H. Robinson. Ahead of the cash-and-stock deal, the Minnesota-based 3PL forecasted $18.4 billion in gross revenue in 2026, with its business mix weighted toward North American Surface Transportation (73 percent of revenue) and global forwarding (18 percent). Last-mile delivery is not separately identified as a meaningful component of C.H. Robinson's pre-deal mix. RXO, by contrast, is expected to generate $6.8 billion in 2026 gross revenue, with the last mile accounting for 19 percent of its business, behind its trucking brokerage's 73 percent share. Last year, RXO reported $1.2 billion in last-mile revenue, up $141 million from $1.06 billion driven in 2024. The increase was driven primarily by a 13 percent increase in volume. The deal could deepen C.H. Robinson's exposure to retail and e-commerce. In a conference call with investors Monday morning, CEO Dave Bozeman said there is "limited customer overlap between our businesses" that will help diversify the company's revenue mix. RXO's annual report shows that $2.15 billion, or roughly 37 percent, of its 2025 revenue came from retail and e-commerce customers - its largest customer-industry category. C.H. Robinson's annual report likewise identifies retail as its leading end market (25 percent) and says it serves 75,000 customers across industries. After the acquisition, Robinson projects the combined company will reel in more than $25 billion in gross revenue, with last mile representing about 5 percent of the total. RXO's last-mile business covers mattresses, furniture, appliances and fitness equipment, while its technicians can assemble and install appliances, electronics and other large items in homes. The acquired company says its network can flex up and down during seasonal peaks. In the investor call, C.H. Robinson's chief financial officer Damon Lee said the technology powering RXO's last-mile capabilities could be "complementary, and even additive" to 3PL's offering. Lee's comments leave open the possibility that some of RXO's consumer-facing capabilities could become part of a broader technology proposition rather than simply being absorbed into Robinson's existing platform. C.H. Robinson will have approximately 93,000 shippers and 600,000 carriers after the acquisition, with its offerings spanning global forwarding, multimodal brokerage, managed transportation, expedite and drop trailer services. Bozeman said in the call that the larger network density should improve freight matching, service levels and the company's ability to penetrate additional modes and customer segments. For retailers, that density could matter particularly as transportation networks become more fragmented across different fulfillment models. C.H. Robinson's work on its carrier network before the RXO deal appears designed to benefit that strategy. In June, the company launched BidBoardX, a digital marketplace designed to give qualified carriers direct access to longer-term committed freight opportunities. The tool is built to allow carriers to search for and bid on repeatable freight that previously often required manual outreach. RXO itself hasn't been a standalone business for very long. XPO spun off the unit as an independent public company in November 2022, separating its asset-light transportation operations from its less-than-truckload (LTL) business. Two years later, RXO acquired freight brokerage and 3PL Coyote Logistics from UPS for more than $1 billion, giving the acquirer more access to smaller carriers. Robinson expects the recent transaction to generate about $300 million in net run-rate cost synergies within two years of closing, with the companies targeting completion in the first half of 2027. The synergy target is primarily based on operating efficiencies, shared services, cost-to-serve improvements and other integration benefits - not a specific revenue target for last-mile cross-selling. Wall Street is not as enamored about the deal for C.H. Robinson, which has seen shares sink more than 13 percent Monday as of noon. For RXO, stock has increased nearly 21 percent on the news. August 2026 news.

August 2026 news. * M&A * August 18, 2026 Last month, my colleague Reid Stack wrote in this space that public markets and private buyers were underwriting an earnings inflection that had not yet been reflected in most sellers' reported results. One earnings season later, that gap has closed. The Q2 2026 results across rail, LTL, truckload, and brokerage confirm what buyers had already priced: the recovery is no longer a forward bet running ahead of the fundamentals. It is in the numbers, and it is broad. For owners who have spent three years hearing that the turn was coming, this is the quarter where the public record caught up with the argument. The evidence is the most convincing I have seen in this cycle, and what makes it convincing is not any single result but the pattern across every mode. All three Class I domestics set quarterly revenue records, led by Union Pacific at $6.9 billion, up 12%. In LTL, XPO broke below an 80% adjusted operating ratio for the first time in company history. In comparison, Old Dominion lifted yield 15.2% against falling tonnage and tied its all-time earnings record. Pricing power of that magnitude, delivered against declining volume, means the discipline held through the trough and the operating leverage on a volume recovery is still ahead of Bluejay Advisors. In truckload, Werner grew one-way revenue per truck per week 27.7%, its strongest gain in a decade, and Knight-Swift reported June contract rates up double digits, with the reset reaching the contract book, where the bulk of carrier revenue is set. Brokerage delivered the cleanest inflection of the quarter: J.B. Hunt's brokerage unit posted its first operating profit in fourteen quarters, and RXO's adjusted EBITDA rose from $6 million to $40 million quarter over quarter. Reid framed July's open question as durability: whether pricing would hold through the next bid cycles. The early answer is yes: spot has settled off its seasonal early-July peak, as it does every year, while holding well above prior-year levels heading into bid season. None of these mean the operating environment is easy, and the hard parts are doing exactly what a supply-driven recovery should: separating operators. Diesel sits at a record seasonal high - roughly $5.40 a gallon nationally, up from $3.70 a year ago - which will make margin conversion choppier quarter to quarter, but also keeps capacity from returning and rewards the carriers whose surcharge recovery and pricing discipline were built before the market turned. The diligence bar rose again this month. Hub Group's August 11 disclosure that it will miss a second consecutive 10-Q deadline, with a September 14 Nasdaq compliance date now in view, is a company-specific situation rather than a sector signal, but it is a timely reminder that buyers now underwrite the quality of a seller's financial reporting as rigorously as the earnings themselves. And policy remains a timing variable rather than a directional one. The August 19 effective date for new 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods arrives with negotiations still live, which keeps raising the strategic value of customs capability and cross-border density. Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern completed their supplemental STB responses in late July and now point to a mid-2027 close. Separately, intermodal's roughly 30% price advantage over truckload is pressuring regional carriers today, whatever that timeline holds. The M&A implication is direct. Bluejay Advisors tracked 189 North American transportation and logistics transactions in the first half of 2026 - the highest first-half count in its database - with a balanced buyer set of strategics at 51% and sponsor-linked capital at 49%, and the view from outside its own numbers matches: PwC's midyear outlook shows median sector deal multiples moving from 9.5x to 10.2x EBITDA in the first four months of the year. The premium is not going to the biggest businesses. It is going to the ones a buyer can least afford to have fail - differentiated capability, embedded customer relationships, and safety, compliance, and reporting practices that hold up in diligence. In July, Reid wrote that materially more sellers would reach market through the back half; its pipeline says that is now underway, which means the competition for buyer attention is building even as the earnings evidence improves. If you are thinking about what this market means for your business as a seller, a buyer, or simply to understand what your company is worth today, I would welcome the conversation.
