Requirements
  • High school graduation or equivalent and one year of chemical, clinical, or public health laboratory experience, or completion of a laboratory assistant course approved by the American Society for Clinical Pathology; equivalent education and experience may substitute where legally permitted.
  • Medical Assistant–Phlebotomist certification from the Washington State Department of Health, or the ability to obtain it within 180 days of the start date.
Responsibilities
  • Receive, sort, and prioritize specimens and requests; match specimens against requisitions for the appropriate tube type; centrifuge and aliquot specimens; process timed urine collections; result and review entries for reference laboratory testing; and perform computer functions.
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on inpatients and outpatients of all ages.
  • Respond promptly, courteously, and professionally to inquiries from patients, clients, hospital staff, and laboratory staff.
  • Instruct patients on proper urine specimen collection.
  • Orient and train new employees, participate in performance improvement activities, and support compliance with Joint Commission, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, and College of American Pathologists accreditation standards.
  • Resolve specimen- and order-related problems promptly, thoroughly, and accurately, and provide appropriate documentation for supervisor review.
Desired Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in science.
  • Experience in a major medical hospital laboratory.
  • Experience with a laboratory information system.
