Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED program.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Must obtain First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of hire.
  • Must obtain certification required by applicable facility or department standards within six months of employment.
  • Must possess a valid Texas driver's license with a good driving record.
  • Must pass an extensive background investigation.
  • Must pass mandatory pre-employment drug testing and be subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
  • Must be able to work with juveniles who may have committed dangerous or aggressive acts in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment.
  • Must be able to work shift changes, mandatory overtime, double shifts, holdover assignments, and callback assignments as essential personnel.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age for applicable positions and pass all portions of the Juvenile Academy or applicable PREA and ethics standards.
  • Must be able to work inside a secured facility with potential exposure to hepatitis, tuberculosis, lice, and other diseases.
  • Must be physically able to restrain or chase youths and use handling-with-care techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youth.
  • Must be able to use a vehicle to transport youths when required.
Responsibilities
  • Provide day-to-day direct supervision to youths in a detention facility in compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and applicable standards, ensuring each youth's health, safety, and welfare.
  • Provide individual and group counseling to promote youths' awareness of responsibilities and alternatives.
  • Make sound decisions during crisis or potentially dangerous situations in the supervisor's absence, inform the supervisor of problems and actions taken, and document actions.
  • Enforce facility rules, document youth behavior and other relevant information, and forward documentation to appropriate personnel.
  • Serve as backup staff and perform duties such as administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and disciplining youths.
  • Conduct inspections, rounds, and drills, including room checks and physical searches of youths.
  • Transport youths to and from appointments.
  • Coordinate and provide daily educational and entertainment programs and activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
