Requirements
  • A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • BLS certification must be obtained within 90 days of hire.
  • One year of patient care assistant or clerical experience is required.
  • The ability to read and write legibly in English is required.
  • The ability to problem-solve rapidly and accurately is required.
  • The ability to maintain composure and communicate effectively during stressful situations is required.
  • The ability to communicate effectively with a multidisciplinary team is required.
  • The ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment is required.
  • The ability to lift, move, and position patients of all weights with varying amounts of assistance is required.
  • Normal visual and hearing acuity is required.
  • Employees must be able to work around body fluids, human tissues, contagious diseases, sharps, explosive gases, cleaning agents, disinfectants, electrical current, and x-ray radiation.
Responsibilities
  • Assist with directing the flow of activities within the nursing unit.
  • Maintain communication between members of the health care team and assist with direct patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Perform assigned direct patient care using the required judgment and skills.
  • Report pertinent observations and concerns directly to the nurse.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living.
  • Document in the electronic medical record according to policy.
  • Perform clerical tasks using computers, copiers, fax machines, and phones.
  • Maintain patient privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate competency in technical skills, complete the skills checklist, and perform required skills correctly.
  • Answer call bells according to hospital standards.
  • Use equipment appropriately.
  • Make decisions in the best interests of the patient, unit, and hospital.
Desired Qualifications
  • Post-high-school business, secretarial, or computer training.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Notary Public certification for the State of West Virginia, or the ability to obtain it within six months of hire and keep it current.
