About the job

Requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline is required.
  • Three to seven years of experience in hardware design and development; experience in rugged, defense, or aerospace environments is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of MIL-STD or other high-reliability design practices.
  • Familiarity with the Government-Industry Data Exchange Program (GIDEP) to identify and report part failures, obsolescence issues, and potential counterfeit risks.
  • Ability to apply Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Testability (DFT) practices throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • U.S. citizenship or lawful immigration status is required; ability to obtain a security clearance may be required.
  • Proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) and design tools such as Altium Designer, SolidWorks, or AutoCAD.
  • Ability to perform the physical functions of the role, including sitting, talking, seeing, hearing, walking, handling objects, reaching, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 25 pounds; reasonable accommodation may be available.
Responsibilities
  • Use Altium Designer or equivalent electronic computer-aided design (ECAD) tools, such as Cadence Allegro or OrCAD, for schematic capture, PCB layout collaboration, and design validation against electrical, mechanical, and ruggedization requirements.
  • Select and integrate commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components to optimize analog and digital performance, ensure compatibility, and meet PCB ruggedization requirements.
  • Identify the need for custom analog and digital PCBs based on system requirements, technical risks, and performance objectives.
  • Define and manage detailed board-level requirements and collaborate with vendors to ensure successful design and manufacturing.
  • Use ECAD tools to develop reliable, high-performance PCBs that balance analog and digital design needs for ruggedized environments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to resolve technical challenges, improve system performance, and optimize designs for manufacturability and robustness while ensuring performance, reliability, and compliance requirements are met.
  • Participate in formal design reviews, including Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), Critical Design Reviews (CDR), Test Readiness Reviews (TRR), and Production Readiness Reviews (PRR), providing input on analog/digital PCB design, system-level integration, and ruggedization strategies.
  • Contribute to peer reviews with expertise in layout, analog/digital design considerations, and ruggedization techniques.
  • Ensure analog and digital components meet durability requirements for vibration, thermal extremes, and shock conditions.
  • Develop engineering drawings, PCB layouts, and system block diagrams in Altium Designer that meet ruggedness, reliability, and military/aerospace compliance standards.
  • Travel occasionally, up to 10%, to customer sites or other company locations.
Desired Qualifications
  • Familiarity with military or high-reliability electronic systems.
  • Experience designing custom PCBs for specialized hardware, including thermal and power management, analog signal processing, and high-speed digital systems.
  • Experience designing and optimizing analog front-end circuits and mixed-signal PCB layouts for ruggedized applications, particularly in fixed-wing and rotorcraft design sectors.
  • Knowledge of military or aerospace standards for rugged electronic systems, with a focus on analog and digital circuit design.
  • Familiarity with video signal conversion technologies, power management, and embedded system design.
  • Working knowledge of military and aerospace electronics, including analog and digital design standards and ruggedization techniques.

What believers are saying

  • September 2026 wins and launches signal accelerating demand across the mission technology stack.
  • August 2026 Oslo expansion more than doubles European engineering and production capacity.
  • June 2026 XSR Spire and G2 Ultra Rugged broaden the product pipeline.

What critics are saying

  • Defense procurement cycles expose Spectra to program delays and award concentration at Kongsberg.
  • Rugged C5ISR competitors like Curtiss-Wright and Mercury Systems pressure pricing and margins.
  • No disclosed funding or audited revenue leaves hiring and runway opaque to candidates.

What makes Spectra Defense Technologies unique

  • 2021 unification joined Calculex, Galleon, and Argon into one C5ISR platform.
  • Spectra sells integrated recorders, mission computers, encryption, and rugged displays across domains.
  • Oslo, Germany, Norway, and U.S. facilities support in-region engineering and manufacturing.
