Requirements
  • Knowledge of the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim curriculum and instructional techniques.
  • Knowledge of pool safety rules, emergency procedures, and first aid practices.
  • Knowledge of fundamental water competency skills and related disciplines.
  • Skill in swimming and demonstrating proper techniques across all swim levels.
  • Skill in providing customer service and communicating effectively with participants, parents, and coworkers through oral and written means.
  • Skill in preparing lesson plans and maintaining accurate participant records.
  • Ability to enforce safety rules and respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team in a fast-paced aquatic environment.
  • Ability to adapt teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles and abilities.
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment using department policies.
  • Ability to work independently under general instructions.
  • Ability to perform physical skills including filing, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting, typing, walking, and writing.

  • Must be enrolled in high school or have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must possess or obtain certification as an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor or Basic Swim Instructor within six months of hire.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and drug and alcohol testing.
Responsibilities
  • Prepare and monitor course and participation records.
  • Evaluate participant swimming abilities to ensure an appropriate level of instruction in a safe setting.
  • Provide learn-to-swim instruction to youth and adults in group or one-on-one formats at a municipal aquatic facility.
  • Create lesson plans and provide instruction in compliance with the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Program.
  • Maintain Water Safety Instructor certification through the American Red Cross.
  • Communicate with parents, volunteers, and participants in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Track participant progress, follow safety protocols, and work with aquatic staff to support program delivery and emergency preparedness.
Desired Qualifications
  • Must be able to complete certification requirements for CPR/First Aid.
