Requirements
  • Current appropriate state licensure is required, and the nurse must meet the practice requirements in the state of employment.
  • One year of Registered Nurse experience is required.
  • A minimum of six months of nephrology experience is required before working independently with no other Dialysis Registered Nurses to provide dialysis and ultrafiltration services.
  • A minimum of six months of nephrology experience is required before working independently with no other Apheresis Registered Nurses to provide apheresis services.
  • Strong assessment skills related to critically ill patients are required.
  • Successful completion of the Progressive Renal Education Preparation internal training course in the theory and practice of care for end-stage renal disease patients is required.
  • Basic Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation recognition is required.
  • Organizational and time-management skills and competency in continuing renal/nephrology education are required.
  • Leadership skills and the ability to direct and supervise Patient Care Technicians, Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and clerical staff are required.
  • Successful completion of Nurses Technical Training is required.
  • The employee must complete the Ishihara Color Blindness Test as a condition of employment; failure does not preclude employment if reasonable accommodation can be made.
  • The position requires participation in an on-call rotation covering nights, days, weekends, and holidays.
  • The position requires the ability to provide direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients or equipment weighing more than 200 pounds with assistance, and lifting chemical and water solutions weighing up to 30 pounds to heights of five feet.
  • The employee must maintain current knowledge of advances in nephrology, particularly inpatient care involving renal replacement, apheresis, and ultrafiltration services.
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct inpatient patient care across hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, ultrafiltration, continuous renal replacement therapy, and apheresis modalities.
  • Provide supervision and direction to Hemodialysis Technicians, Licensed Practical Nurses, other Registered Nurses, and clerical staff, and provide direction and education to Intensive Care Unit staff for continuous renal replacement therapy.
  • Provide the prescribed treatment technique for assigned patients in the Inpatient Renal Replacement and Apheresis Services setting.
  • Assess patient responses to treatment therapy and make appropriate treatment-plan adjustments and modifications as indicated by the appropriately credentialed physician.
  • Communicate patient problems or concerns to the Inpatient Program Manager, appropriately credentialed physician, hospital primary nurse, and other indicated parties.
  • Deliver safe, effective, timely, and efficient patient care.
  • Provide organized and concise shift reports and adjust patient schedules to meet the needs of more critical patients based on laboratory results, physician orders, and patient assessments.
  • Implement, administer, monitor, and document patients' responses to prescribed intradialytic transfusions, including notifying the physician and blood supplier of adverse reactions.
  • Collaborate and communicate with physicians and other healthcare team members to interpret, adjust, and coordinate daily patient care plans and ensure continuity of care.
  • Initiate and communicate with facility nursing staff and appropriate hospital personnel as needed.
  • Accurately document treatment information in the individual patient record and hospital record as needed.
  • Clean and disinfect dialysis machine surfaces, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments according to inpatient renal services policies and procedures.
  • Prepare for dialysis treatments and document preparation activities where appropriate.
  • Perform required pre-treatment dialysis machine alarm testing.
  • Initiate the Solution Delivery System when applicable.
  • Operate related equipment safely and appropriately, perform minor troubleshooting when necessary, and use supplies efficiently to prevent waste.
  • Conduct and document dialysis and apheresis machine safety and alarm tests, equipment calibration, dialysate testing, functional testing, and internal and external disinfection of water and dialysis machines in accordance with policy and notification standards.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Quality Assessment and Improvement activities.
  • Participate in scheduled staff meetings, staff training, and orientation as assigned.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for hospital staff regarding dialysis-related patient and equipment complications.
  • Report new or unusual incidents, information, complaints, and problems according to adverse-event reporting requirements.
  • Provide in-center patient care on an as-needed basis.
  • Comply with the Code of Business Conduct, company policies and procedures, and applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
  • Assist with projects assigned by the direct supervisor and perform other assigned duties.
  • Travel between assigned hospitals and facilities and attend regional meetings and educational events.
Desired Qualifications
  • Dialysis experience is preferred but not required.
  • Intensive Care Unit and/or Emergency Department experience is preferred but not required.
  • Certification in Nephrology Nursing, Apheresis Nursing, or both is highly encouraged.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support cardiopulmonary resuscitation recognition is preferred but not required.
