About the job

Requirements
  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license issued by the state where services are provided, or a current multistate Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • Alternatively, hold a current temporary or graduate Registered Nurse permit as required by the state board where services are provided. In Maryland, provide documentation of recent graduation from a school of nursing and obtain a permanent Registered Nurse license within 90 days of graduation; Ohio nurses must be currently licensed; Pennsylvania nurses must hold a current temporary Registered Nurse permit and obtain a permanent license before it expires; West Virginia nurses must hold a current graduate Registered Nurse permit and obtain a permanent license before it expires. Temporary permits are valid only in the state of issuance and are not multistate licenses.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Meet the physical demands of heavy/hard work, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40 pounds or more; patient transfers, lifts, and repositioning must use lift equipment or other patient-handling aids as indicated by the patient profile and appropriate algorithms.
  • Work in an environment that may involve close work with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, the deceased, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibility, use appropriate authority, and accept accountability for delivering patient care.
  • Provide direct patient care during an assigned shift using the nursing process and within role and scope of practice.
  • Make appropriate clinical decisions and use expert peers or management when applicable.
  • Respond to data indicating common risks to patient health by initiating actions to correct, reduce, or prevent those risks.
  • Provide coordinated, comprehensive patient care—including assessment, expected outcomes, nursing interventions, and evaluation—through an interdisciplinary team approach.
  • Negotiate patient-care tasks with patients and families within safe-practice guidelines; delegate tasks to assigned personnel and follow up on task completion and patient response.
  • Use independent nursing judgment and accept accountability for care provided by oneself and by health-care providers to whom care is delegated.
  • Apply standards and use resources effectively, evaluating patient response in the delivery of care.
  • Use standards of care and practice to guide care delivery.
  • Base decisions and actions on relevant scientific principles, established standards of care, or research findings; seek assistance or credible resources when unable to perform safely and independently.
  • Evaluate patient responses to performed and delegated tasks, including Patient Profile Assessment for safe patient handling and mobility.
  • Determine and revise priorities for direct and indirect patient-care activities based on patient acuity and available resources; update the daily care plan with appropriate safe-patient-handling algorithms.
  • Use established patient-care support systems, including documentation, communication, and information systems.
  • Support the development of others, engage in mentoring and networking to promote professional development, and foster the integration of staff and students into the health-care team and the unit's mission, values, and vision.
  • Promote trusting relationships and open, honest communication at the unit level; exchange information relevant to patient assignments and interact with health-care team members to meet patient-care needs.
  • Participate in performance-improvement activities as appropriate.
  • At facilities with specialty accreditation requirements, complete annual required education related to specialty accreditation, which may include computer-based learning, training, in-services, and competency validation.
Desired Qualifications
  • A Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree.
