Requirements
  • Identify and categorize each patient's age-specific needs, including infant, adolescent, and geriatric patients.
  • Greet, seat, and depart patients courteously and professionally while protecting confidential information.
  • Provide patient education and instructions before, during, and after dental procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and staff verbally and in writing, and read and interpret common written dental materials.
  • Read and write in English.
  • Communicate basic mathematical figures and amounts, including discounts, proportions, and percentages.
  • Define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Maintain infection-control practices that prevent employee and patient exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Complete a formal Dental Assistant program at a college, technical institute, or equivalent; employees without formal training must have at least one year of work experience as a Dental Assistant.
  • Be registered with the Washington State Department of Health and maintain the registration annually.
  • Obtain Basic Life Support CPR within 90 days of hire and maintain current certification throughout employment.
  • Undergo an annual tuberculosis test.
  • Complete pre-hire and annual employee health screening.
  • Receive the annual influenza vaccine, unless an approved medical or religious exemption applies; employees with an approved exemption must wear a mask throughout flu season.
  • Sign an oath of permanent confidentiality covering patient-related information.
  • Pass a background check from the Washington State Patrol.
  • Meet the physical requirements of dental assisting, including sitting, standing, walking, using hands and fingers, reaching, talking, hearing, occasional stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
Responsibilities
  • Anticipate and provide Dental Providers with necessary chairside assistance using four-handed dentistry for diagnostic, preventive, restorative, endodontic, periodontal, oral surgery, prosthodontic, orthodontic, and other services allowed by the Washington Dental Practice Act.
  • Escort each patient to and from the treatment room.
  • Communicate provider and patient-flow delays to the Lead Dental Assistant, Dental Provider, patients, and front-desk staff.
  • Schedule appointments for arriving and departing patients in Dentrix and register patients in Allscripts PM.
  • Complete thorough and accurate charting in Dentrix using SOAP or PARTS format.
  • Obtain accurate blood-pressure readings and other vital signs as directed by the Dental Provider.
  • Maintain proper sterilization methods and OSHA compliance in clinic and sterilization areas.
  • Perform responsibilities in the Dental Department Task & Duty List and other duties assigned by the supervisor or Regional Dental Manager.
  • Train new employees and dental trainees.
  • Assist with inventory and ordering dental supplies.
  • Participate in Dental Department and Sea Mar Community Health Centers quality-improvement activities.
  • Perform temporary work in other departments or dental sites when assigned.
  • Travel when required by clinic activities.
