Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain physics-based models and simulations of inertial navigation systems, including sensors such as gyros and accelerometers, error sources, and environmental effects.
  • Perform Monte Carlo analyses, sensitivity studies, and trade-off analyses to assess system performance, robustness, and margins against requirements.
  • Analyze laboratory, flight, and field test data to validate models, quantify performance, and identify discrepancies between predicted and observed behavior.
  • Support requirements decomposition by providing model-based performance predictions, error budgets, and allocation rationale for key inertial navigation metrics.
  • Generate and maintain reusable simulation frameworks and toolchains, including MATLAB/Simulink, Python, and C/C++ models, across programs and product lines.
  • Collaborate with systems, hardware, and software engineering teams to integrate models into hardware-in-the-loop and software-in-the-loop environments for early verification of navigation algorithms and interfaces.
  • Contribute to test planning by defining model-informed test cases, corner conditions, and stress scenarios to verify navigation performance and robustness.
  • Analyze test and qualification results, perform root-cause investigations on anomalies, and provide data-driven recommendations for design updates or calibration strategies.
  • Prepare technical documentation and artifacts, including modeling assumptions, validation reports, analysis briefs, and executive-level presentations summarizing navigation performance, risks, and mitigation options.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers in modeling, simulation, and data analysis methods.
  • Drive continuous improvement in modeling, simulation, and analysis processes, tools, and standards for inertial navigation products, including model reuse, configuration management, and lessons-learned documentation.

Northrop Grumman wins $4.8B Army contract, but execution is the real challenge

The US Army has awarded Northrop Grumman a $4.8 billion contract for its Common Infrared Countermeasure system, running through September 2035. The company has already delivered over 750 CIRCM units, which have logged more than 75,000 operational flight hours on Apache and Chinook helicopters. The award adds to Northrop's expanding backlog, which reached a record $104.7 billion after securing $20 billion in net awards during Q2. Major contracts included $7.6 billion for Sentinel and $4.3 billion for classified programmes. Despite strong demand, profitability remains a concern. Northrop's Q2 operating margin fell to 10.1% from 13.8% a year earlier, with Defence Systems margin dropping to 7.5% from 12.7%, partly due to higher costs on specific programmes.

Layton's East Gate Business Park is a long-term economic development initiative near Hill Air Force Base with the goal of attracting thousands of industrial and manufacturing jobs over the next decade. The new Northrop Grumman facility is the latest to call the business park home. Industry, local and state leaders celebrated the opening of Northrop Grumman's new facility with a ribbon cutting Wednesday morning. "We need you. America needs you," Layton Mayor Joy Petro stated at the event. "So, with that, I just want to say welcome, everyone, and let's get this show on the road." This, she said, is years in the making. "We're creating an ecosystem here for our nation's defense with innovation, manufacturing, workforce development, and, of course, an economic opportunity where we can all come together." The building, and others at the business park, will be used for the production of the B-21 Raider. "I believe it will be the predominant deterrent weapons system of the future," Northrop Grumman's vice president and president of aeronautics systems, Tom Jones, said. The aircraft isn't being used in combat just yet. Northrop Grumman's website further explains: "The B-21 Raider continues its flight test campaign at Edwards Air Force Base, California, led by a Combined Test Force (CTF) comprised of Northrop Grumman and Air Force personnel. CTF pilots indicate the jet is performing as expected with the aircraft flying like the simulator, reflecting the precision of the digital environment on B-21." "This is what is going to help keep peace and stability in the world, the platform that we're building here," stated Jones. The U.S. Air Force says the B-21 Raider will play a crucial role. Its website explains: "It will be a dual-capable penetrating strike stealth bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions." Both local and state leaders welcome Northrop Grumman's expanded footprint in Utah and its development of the B-21. "The cutting-edge innovation that takes place at Northrop Grumman ensures that the United States is prepared for whatever comes next," Senate President J. Stuart Adams (R-Layton) said at the ribbon cutting. Tom Jones said the work done at the East Gate 3 facility will support 1500 engineering jobs.

The announcements cover four key areas: command-and-control systems, medium-caliber weapons, airborne surveillance, and counter-drone technology. NOC stock was trading around its recent range as the news broke, with no immediate price catalyst tied to the announcements given the lack of confirmed contract values. The agreements were framed as preliminary steps, not firm orders. Northrop was clear that the memorandums do not guarantee future revenue or deliveries. IBCS Gets Deeper European Roots Northrop signed MOUs with two Estonian companies to support its Integrated Battle Command System. Go Craft will focus on defense system integration, while DefSecIntel will handle mast fabrication and production. IBCS pulls data from multiple sensors into a single battlefield picture, letting commanders pick the best weapon for each threat. It is already in full-rate production and operational with both the U.S. Army and Poland. Adding Estonian partners gives Northrop more local capacity to deploy and sustain IBCS across the region, which could strengthen its position as NATO members modernize air and missile defenses. Bushmaster and the E-2D On the weapons side, Northrop deepened its relationship with Polish vehicle maker Huta Stalowa Wola. The collaboration covers technology transfers, servicing, and production of the Bushmaster chain gun family, which is already installed on Poland's Rosomak and Borsuk military vehicles. Bushmaster cannons are used by the U.S. and 65 allied countries across land, air, and naval platforms. Expanding local Polish production could help Northrop meet growing regional demand while also improving its chances of winning government contracts, since many countries favor defense purchases that support domestic industry. Northrop also confirmed it is still in talks with Poland over the E-2D Advanced Hawkeye, an airborne command-and-control aircraft that can detect thousands of targets simultaneously, including low-flying drones and cruise missiles. No purchase agreement has been reached, and the number of aircraft under consideration was not disclosed. A confirmed Polish order for the E-2D would represent a major aircraft deal and could generate long-term revenue from training, maintenance, and upgrades. Raid Hunter Enters the Picture Northrop also promoted Raid Hunter, its short-range air defense system built to intercept drones, drone swarms, and cruise missiles using guided 50-millimeter interceptors. The system is designed to engage threats that either slip through longer-range defenses or arrive too quickly for traditional missile interceptors. Its palletized design allows for rapid deployment, with vehicle-mounted and container-based versions planned for the future.
