About the company

PERSEO is Iberdrola's corporate venture capital program. It invests in startups developing technologies and business models in the energy sector to support Iberdrola's goals of decarbonization, electrification, and digitalization. The program uses a fund of over €200 million and has invested in more than 20 startups, plus a venture builder unit that creates new companies from scratch. Investments are complemented by access to Iberdrola's expertise, resources, and global network, helping portfolio companies scale. PERSEO differentiates itself by aligning venture investments with Iberdrola's strategic aims, offering strategic support and scale opportunities alongside purely financial backing, and by combining an active venture investment approach with in-house company creation. Its goal is to accelerate the development of innovative solutions in renewables, energy storage, smart grids, electric mobility, and energy efficiency that advance Iberdrola's transition objectives.

Iberdrola invests $10.7M in EV charger maker Wallbox to boost profitability push

Wallbox has raised €9.5 million in a financing round led by Iberdrola through its subsidiary Inversiones Financieras Perseo. Madrid-based Orilla Asset Management, linked to Francisco Riberas' family, participated alongside Wallbox CEO Enric Asunción and existing investors. The New York Stock Exchange-listed company will use the funds to strengthen its financial position and expand its global presence in electric vehicle charging. Wallbox recorded losses exceeding €100 million in 2023. CEO Enric Asunción said the investment reinforces the company's mission to make EV charging more accessible whilst driving operational efficiency. Iberdrola's David Mesonero stated the round will strengthen Wallbox's liquidity to execute its business plan. The investment comes amid slower-than-expected electric vehicle growth, though efforts are increasing across Europe to boost charging infrastructure.

Iberdrola acquires Contigo Energía, adding 100,000 electricity customers in Spain

Iberdrola has agreed to acquire the electricity retail business of Contigo Energía from Gesternova Group, adding 100,000 power customers in Spain. This marks the first acquisition of a retail electricity supplier by Iberdrola in its home market. The transaction, subject to customary closing conditions, forms part of Iberdrola's growth strategy in Spain's retail segment. The company views commercialisation as a key lever to accelerate electrification of homes and businesses. Contigo Energía will continue operating independently within the Iberdrola Group, similar to its subsidiary Niba, launched in June 2025 as a fully digital energy retailer. The deal covers only the electricity retail business and customer portfolio. Iberdrola leads Spain's market with nearly 9.8 million supply points, ahead of Endesa with over 9 million and Naturgy with almost 4.4 million.

The initiative won a New-Tech Challenge within Iberdrola's PERSEO innovation programme, receiving over 40 proposals from ten countries. The 12-month pilot will launch in Spain, with ICEYE's Flood Solutions Suite providing forecasting, rapid impact assessment and flood insights.
