Requirements
- Nurse practitioners must graduate from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education-accredited nursing program with a Master's Degree in Nursing.
- Nurse practitioners must hold national certification from one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers.
- Nurse practitioners must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification is required, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department's discretion.
- Physician assistants must hold a Bachelor's Degree or Master's degree as a Physician Assistant.
- Physician assistants must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Physician assistants must hold certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Physician assistants must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Eligible new graduates will be considered.

- The role involves working closely with others, protracted or irregular hours, biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, hands in water, and electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Complete comprehensive patient health evaluations, including biological, social, and psychological assessments, in collaboration with the appropriate clinical and faculty team.
- Assess and coordinate the educational and psychosocial needs of patients and caretakers.
- Develop and review plans of care with clinical team members, participate in directing care, and coordinate discharge planning and follow-up.
- Participate in educating residents and medical and nursing students, and perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for patients and families in the infusion center and ambulatory setting.
- Complete daily rounds, consultations, pre-treatment and pre-procedure evaluations, ambulatory clinics, and inpatient patient care as applicable.
- Complete integrated assessments.
- Order additional tests or consultations in collaboration with Hematology/Oncology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform and communicate diagnostic test results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal patient findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient discharge and follow-up by ordering and coordinating appropriate services and tests before discharge from the infusion center.
- Perform necessary procedures according to established clinical guidelines, protocols, and scope of practice.
- Develop individualized Hematology/Oncology plans of care, including acute management, teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
- Identify unstable or complex Hematology/Oncology care situations and facilitate appropriate interventions in infusion center, clinic, and hospital settings.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate Hematology/Oncology patients and direct follow-up procedures and tests in the ambulatory setting.
- Assist in collecting outcome measures.
- Demonstrate critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making by identifying, evaluating, and managing individual patient and family needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, established standards of care, and research findings.
- Use teaching and learning theory and appropriate teaching strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
- Promote an environment that facilitates learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of patient and family teaching and collaborate with nursing and clinical staff to complete education plans.
- Update professional knowledge throughout the year and complete identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for Hematology/Oncology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel in the area of expertise.
- Mentor nursing personnel at all levels of clinical practice.
- Participate in community programs and distribute literature as appropriate within the area of expertise.
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services to ensure coordinated and efficient patient care.
- Document plans of care, interventions, and evaluations for every patient visit in the medical record according to approved hospital and University Health Associates policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in Hematology/Oncology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote and practice innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to Hematology/Oncology patients and families in infusion center, inpatient, and ambulatory settings.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Participate in the WVUH/University Health Associates Performance Improvement Plan and apply its findings to improve patient care.
- Review and interpret Hematology/Oncology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist faculty, administrators, and directors in collecting outcome measures.
- Oversee and provide comprehensive individualized care for patients evaluated and managed in the infusion center within scope of practice.
- Provide direct supervision of patients in the infusion center until the last patient receiving an infusion leaves the center.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in Hematology/Oncology, acute care, or internal medicine is preferred.
- OCN or AOCN certification is preferred.
- A Master's-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
