Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited law school.
  • A current license to practice law in the State of Texas.
  • Two years and six months of experience practicing law.
  • Experience as lead prosecutor for all levels of felony offenses, serving as lead counsel in conjunction with civil litigation, or extensive appellate work on direct appeals.
Responsibilities
  • Perform advanced legal work in the assigned area with minimal supervision and oversight.
  • Conduct litigation and legal research, draft legal documents, and interpret laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Make tactical and legal decisions in connection with assigned cases under general direction.
  • Prosecute complex general or special-category felony cases in assigned court.
  • Evaluate criminal complaints to determine whether to accept or reject cases for prosecution, select appropriate charges, and prepare documentation for indictment.
  • Evaluate assigned cases or lawsuits by reviewing documentation, conducting legal research, interviewing witnesses or persons with knowledge of the case, gathering evidence, and determining appropriate actions.
  • Draft, file, and respond to motions, briefs, and other legal documents for trials and hearings.
  • Explain the legal process to potential witnesses, prepare witnesses for court testimony, and keep clients or victims and their families informed about case status.
  • Gather, prepare, and present evidence, exhibits, and related materials for trials or hearings.
  • Represent the State or a client in trials and hearings by conducting jury selection, presenting opening statements, conducting direct and cross-examinations, and presenting closing arguments.
  • Negotiate settlements or plea bargains and obtain approval when necessary.
  • Prepare legal documents when settlements or plea bargains are reached, secure required signatures, and file documents as required.
  • Manage court dockets and case schedules to meet deadlines and keep records and documentation accurate and current.
  • Train or assist in training Attorneys I, II, and III.
  • Perform some duties of the Section Chief on an as-needed, short-term temporary basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
