Uber's 12.1% operating margin tops rivals, but investors pay less for it than for JB Hunt

Uber Technologies keeps a larger share of sales as operating profit than four rivals in ride-hailing, delivery and freight. Its operating margin reached 12.1% over the past twelve months, up from a loss equal to 1.6% of sales three years ago. Free cash flow topped $10 billion for the first time. Yet investors pay less per dollar of Uber's earnings than for three peers. Uber trades at 15.2 times earnings, against 32.0 for JB Hunt and 99.7 for DoorDash. Uber stock fell 23.6% over twelve months, while JB Hunt rose 68.4%. Revenue growth slowed to 12.2% in the second quarter of 2026, while gross bookings grew 22%. Management blamed part of the gap on a UK business model change. Uber plans to invest $10 billion in autonomous vehicles. It has not yet sized the effect on profit.

Uber and Pony.ai to launch robotaxis in London

Uber and Chinese autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai plan to launch a robotaxi service in London, expanding their partnership into Europe. The companies will begin testing Pony.ai's Gen-7 robotaxis in the city in the coming weeks. The announcement follows Uber's strategy of partnering with over 30 autonomous vehicle firms to capture market share in autonomous delivery and ride-hailing. Uber expects to offer autonomous vehicle trips in 15 cities globally by the end of 2026. Uber and Pony.ai first partnered in May 2025, initially focusing on the Middle East. They plan to deploy 2,000 robotaxis across Europe, starting with Zagreb, where they launched a service in August 2026 with partner Verne. Uber also plans a separate London robotaxi service with British startup Wayve.

Uber invests in Croatian robotaxi provider Verne, deepens Zagreb partnership

Uber has invested in Croatian robotaxi provider Verne, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi confirmed following a visit to Zagreb where he completed a fully driverless ride. The investment deepens the partnership between the companies, which launched a commercial robotaxi service in Zagreb in April covering approximately 90 square kilometres. Since August, Verne's autonomous vehicles have been bookable through the Uber app. The service currently uses Arcfox Alpha T5 vehicles equipped with Pony.ai's Gen-7 autonomous driving system. Verne is developing its own purpose-built robotaxi—an electric two-seater without steering wheel or pedals, based on Mobileye Drive technology. By end-2025, the company had completed 60 verification prototypes. Verne co-founder Mate Rimac indicated further joint expansion plans beyond Croatia, with negotiations underway for deployments in additional European cities, the UK, and the Middle East.

Pelosi and Ackman both bet on Uber and Amazon with $4.5B stake

Nancy Pelosi's spouse and hedge fund manager Bill Ackman both hold positions in Uber and Amazon, though at vastly different scales. Pelosi's husband purchased 200 Uber call options on 29 May with a $50 strike price expiring March 2027. Ackman's Pershing Square owns 34.3 million Uber shares worth approximately $2.48 billion, representing 12.72% of the fund's assets. Ackman increased this stake by 15% during the second quarter. Both also hold Amazon positions. Pelosi owns call options with a $120 strike price, whilst Pershing Square holds 8.56 million shares worth about $2.04 billion. Amazon's valuation premium centres on AWS, which comprises 21% of revenue but generates 60% of operating profit. The non-GAAP forward P/E of 30.64 is more than double the sector median of 14.73.
