About the job

Requirements
  • Have at least 7 years of experience running a diamond core drilling rig as the driller, counted as time at the controls rather than helper-side experience.
  • Have direct experience on diamond core rigs in surface operations, underground operations, or both.
  • Have strong mechanical understanding of drill-rig hydraulics, the drive head, rod handling system, pumps, and power unit.
  • Be disciplined about inspection and maintenance routines and recognize early warning signs in gauges, sound, vibration, and returns before a breakdown occurs.
  • Be proficient across diamond core rig tooling, including bits, reaming shells, core barrels, overshots, casing, and wireline equipment.
  • Have experience solving downhole problems such as cementing, wedging, rod recovery, and lost circulation.
  • Apply a safety-first standard and hold everyone on the drill site to that standard.
  • Communicate with crew members, geologists, and clients, and raise concerns early.
  • Demonstrate honesty about shift events and reliability when unsupervised.
  • Maintain equipment and drill-site condition to a high standard without being asked.
  • Be curious about equipment improvements and able to articulate ideas for engineering.
  • Be based in the southwestern United States near a major airport, available for short-notice travel, and able to work a rotation matched to operating programs.
  • Have a valid driver's license and be able to obtain MSHA certification.
Responsibilities
  • Run a diamond core drilling rig through full shifts while meeting client expectations for core quality, recovery, and advance rates.
  • Operate and learn an automated drilling platform, adapting conventional technique to new equipment and controls.
  • Complete daily shift checks and equipment inspections, track scheduled servicing, and identify the need for field repairs to keep the rig available and compliant.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and functional issues early and raise developing faults before they cause rig failure.
  • Set up and tear down drill sites, including rig moves, leveling, water supply, and site housekeeping.
  • Manage drill holes from collar to completion, including rod handling, core retrieval, casing, and downhole problem solving.
  • Lead the crew on shift, set the pace, uphold safety standards, and support helpers.
  • Maintain housekeeping and equipment upkeep on the machine to a high standard.
  • Maintain accurate shift reports covering advance, consumables, fluid use, downtime, and equipment condition.
  • Stop operations whenever conditions warrant, regardless of schedule pressure.
  • Communicate throughout the shift with the client geologist, operations manager, and engineering team.
  • Report rig behavior, failure modes, and design shortcomings to engineering to inform platform revisions.
  • Support field trials of new tooling and automation features as the platform develops.
Desired Qualifications
  • A commercial driver's license is highly desirable.

About the company

Durin develops and operates automated and remotely controlled drill rigs to speed up mineral discovery. It designs, builds, and runs its rigs and collects real-time geological data, integrating this with geological modeling, lab testing, and drillhole planning on a single platform. Rigs gather mineralogical and structural data in minutes and assay data in days, and can be operated remotely to reduce on-site labor and improve safety. The goal is to scale production globally, delivering faster, safer, and more cost-efficient exploration by shortening cycles and improving decision-making.

What believers are saying

  • Durin added five 2026 jobs, including drilling operations, signaling active field expansion.
  • The company reports 26 employees and opened Tucson operations to support drilling execution.
  • Durin's March 2025 funding from a16z and Lux Capital validates investor appetite.

What critics are saying

  • Boart Longyear, Epiroc, Atlas Copco, and Caterpillar already dominate drilling hardware.
  • If prototype reliability stalls, Durin stays a services startup with no defensible moat.
  • Critical-minerals demand delays or one failed field program can freeze fundraising before 2027.

What makes Durin unique

  • Durin vertically integrates rigs, drilling operations, assays, and data analytics, tightening feedback loops.
  • Ted Feldmann combines mining-family roots, geophysics, and computer science for product intuition.
  • Durin targets faster mineral discovery by sending rig data to geologists in minutes.
