Maha CM inaugurates Hyundai plant in Pune.

Maha CM inaugurates Hyundai plant in Pune. On Oct 14, 2026 Pune, Oct 14 (IANS) In a major flip in Maharashtra's industrial landscape, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis formally inaugurated Hyundai Motor India's advanced manufacturing facility at Talegaon in Pune on Wednesday. The opening of the high-capacity plant, stemming from the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed at Davos, drew sharp praise from state leaders, who hailed it as a decisive rebuttal to the opposition's narrative regarding investments in the state. The inauguration ceremony was graced by Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar, Industries and Marathi Language Minister Uday Samant, alongside global leadership from the Hyundai Motor Group. The landmark project underscores massive capital commitment toward Maharashtra's industrial sector, bolstering the state's position as a premier global automobile and manufacturing hub. According to Industries Minister Uday Samant, the facility will trigger a massive surge in direct and indirect employment. It is poised to create extensive business opportunities for local auto-component manufacturers, micro-entrepreneurs, and ancillary small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Pune industrial belt. Equipped with cutting-edge technology and smart manufacturing systems, the plant will leverage local skilled manpower and reinforce Pune's standing as a premier global automotive hub. Addressing critics who previously alleged a slowdown in industrial momentum and a flight of investments from Maharashtra, Minister Samant launched a scathing counter-attack. He stated that the seamless transition of the Davos MoU into a fully realised manufacturing plant exposes the hollow "propaganda" of the opposition. He emphasised that the Mahayuti government's policy is anchored in translating intent into execution on the ground rather than indulging in politics of allegations. Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar noted that Pune, already a recognised powerhouse for education, IT, and engineering, is now scaling new heights in next-generation automobile manufacturing. She emphasised that the project guarantees broad-based economic prosperity and abundant career prospects for the youth of Maharashtra. Both Deputy Chief Minister Pawar and Minister Samant reiterated that Maharashtra remains the preferred destination for mega-scale global investments, setting a high benchmark for industrial governance and fast-track execution.

October 14, 2026 South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Group (HMG), comprising Hyundai Motor and Kia Corporation, announced that it plans to invest USD 15.5 billion in India over a period of seven years, between 2026 and 2032, to position the country as a "strategic core market for the group's future growth, emerging market expansion, and next-generation automotive innovation." The investment plan was discussed during a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Hon'ble Shri Narendra Modi Ji and Hyundai Motor Group chairman Euisun Chung at the Prime Minister's Office in New Delhi on 13 October 2026. The investment plan aims to "foster a comprehensive automotive industry ecosystem" in India, and will include manufacturing capacity expansion, research and development (R&D) infrastructure development, supplier development to help increase local parts sourcing, and future technology innovation. HMG said it will establish a dedicated investment entity in India to "effectively execute this large-scale investment initiative." The role of the new unit will be to coordinate and execute investments across R&D infrastructure, future technologies and the broader automotive industry ecosystem. It will also serve as a platform to identify outstanding local partners, support strategic partnerships and foster collaboration with leading local suppliers. Euisun Chung said in a statement: "India remains one of HMG's most important and strategic markets globally. The past 30 years have been defined by our commitment to India. This investment reaffirms our commitment to India for the next 30 years and beyond. Through this investment, we will create more employment opportunities and work together with our partners and stakeholders to support India's continued industrial development." HMG outlined the individual areas of investment in more detail: Manufacturing Expansion: HMG plans to expand manufacturing capacity across Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) and Kia India, to support significant volume growth while ensuring the local supply chain can meet demand. This expansion will position India as one of the leading global export "platforms" for HMG. R&D Infrastructure and Technology: HMG plans to invest US$ 700 million to establish a complete R&D system in India through infrastructure expansion and local talent development. A key focus will be to strengthen the technological competitiveness of HMG's local products through the Indian R&D centre. The planned investment includes a vehicle testing track, which will help accelerate next-generation automotive technology development and establish India as a core innovation hub. Local Supply Chain Resilience: HMG will strengthen its local supply chain and support supplier development in India through strategic investments in regional partners. These partnerships will enhance parts localization, identify high-quality local suppliers and build a stable, resilient supply-chain ecosystem across the Indian automotive industry. Future Mobility Innovation: HMG aims to lead India's future mobility ecosystem through strategic investments in emerging opportunities. This includes support for high-potential startups and expansion into new mobility services that integrate with its core vehicle business. HMG will also explore opportunities in new business verticals including specialized automotive financing, EV charging infrastructure, and end-of-life vehicle recycling. HMG pointed out that it currently employs more than 24,000 people across India, and has a production capacity of more than 1.4 million vehicles annually, including 824,000 units/year at HMIL's facilities in Chennai; 170,000 units/year at HMIL's manufacturing facility in Pune; and 431,000 units/year at Kia India's Anantapur plant. Production capacity at the Pune plant is scheduled to be scaled up in phases.

Hyundai chief pledges to invest $15.5b in India by 2032.

Hyundai chief pledges to invest $15.5b in India by 2032. Published: Oct. 14, 2026 - 03:30:00 Byun Hye-jin New Delhi, INDIA - Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun pledged to invest $15.5 billion in India over the next seven years during talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, building on the momentum of the automaker's newly opened manufacturing facility in Pune, Maharashtra. The company said Tuesday Chung met with Modi earlier in the day at the Prime Minister's office in New Delhi, where the two discussed utilizing funds into building new production facilities, scaling domestic R&D, strengthening local supply chains and exploring future mobility solutions. The meeting marked the eighth encounter between Chung and Modi, underscoring their ongoing dialogue regarding India's industrial transformation and Modi's "Make in India" and "Viksit Bharat 2047" national development agendas. Under the investment package, Hyundai plans to significantly elevate its local R&D capabilities by expanding engineering infrastructure and recruiting top-tier Indian talent to accelerate the development of localized products and technologies. The group is also deepening ties with Indian firms. In partnership with two-wheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company, Hyundai has developed an electric three-wheeler prototype, targeting commercial launch by late 2027. In addition, it will expand into broader mobility services, auto financing, electric vehicle charging networks and end-of-life vehicle recycling. To coordinate these initiatives efficiently, the South Korean auto giant will establish a dedicated investment arm in India to identify strategic opportunities, forge partnerships with local firms and invest in the broader automotive ecosystem. Chung told Modi that Hyundai has grown alongside India over the past 30 years since first entering the market in 1996 and is now preparing for its next major milestone. "With the operational launch of the Pune plant, Hyundai Motor Group has secured an annual production capacity of 1.4 million units," Chung said. In addition to the Pune facility, Hyundai operates two plants in Chennai, alongside Kia's manufacturing hub in Anantapur. This expanded capacity provides a strong buffer against high auto tariffs imposed by India - which range from 70 to 110 percent - while enabling Hyundai to meet the country's surging demand for automobiles. India is the world's third-largest auto market after China and the US, with its passenger vehicle segment projected to expand by nearly 15 percent from 4.57 million units in 2025 to 5.25 million in 2026. Chung also highlighted India as a strategic gateway to Global South such as the Middle East and Africa, citing its competitive production costs and geographical proximity to expand exports. Beyond business expansion, Chung emphasized the group's commitment to corporate social responsibility activities, including social contributions totaling approximately $110 million between 2016 and 2025 across Hyundai, Kia and Hyundai Mobis.
