Requirements
  • A current approved Alabama Board of Nursing Registered Nurse license or a multistate license is required, or the ability to obtain one before starting.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support Provider training is required.
  • An Associate degree is required at minimum.
  • The ability to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is required for Cardiac/Critical Care and several designated clinical areas.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support is required for designated Emergency Department, PACU, and Pediatrics positions.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course is required for the Regional Campus Emergency Department.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program certification is required for designated Women’s and Children’s areas.
  • Intermediate Fetal Monitoring is required for Labor and Delivery.
  • The role requires clear and accurate communication, decision-making affecting others, delegation to and receipt of delegation from team members and students, conflict management, and the ability to work under time pressure.
  • The role requires physical presence onsite, the ability to tolerate prolonged standing and walking, and the ability to perform medium work involving lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying.
  • The employee must be able to work prolonged shifts, including every other weekend, with Saturday and Sunday included in weekend scheduling.
Responsibilities
  • Plan, coordinate, and direct quality, compassionate care by maintaining professional nursing practice standards and creating positive therapeutic relationships with patients and families.
  • Supervise LPNs, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, orthopedic technicians, and other non-licensed staff.
  • Assess each assigned patient on admission and on an ongoing basis, including physical, psychological, social, spiritual, cultural, pain, nutritional, functional, developmental, age-related, and discharge-planning needs.
  • Plan, provide, and document patient and significant-other education after identifying barriers to learning.
  • Evaluate and regularly reevaluate patient care and coordinate care planning with patients, families, providers, and other disciplines to achieve patient-centered outcomes.
  • Assign and delegate nursing care to team members according to patient needs and team-member capabilities.
  • Apply safety principles when performing care.
  • Accurately document observations, care provided, and changes in the care plan.
  • Provide accurate handoff reports and participate in unit-based huddles.
  • Assist with performance-improvement activities by serving on performance-improvement teams, assisting with performance-improvement measures, and supporting and implementing necessary changes.
  • Perform initial and annual competency assessments by job class.
  • Maintain performance, patient and employee satisfaction, and financial standards outlined in the performance evaluation.
  • Perform compliance requirements outlined in the Employee Handbook and adhere to DCH Health System policies and procedures.
  • Create positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, colleagues, and self in accordance with DCH Behavioral Standards.
  • Perform essential job functions in a manner that ensures patient, visitor, and employee safety.
  • Identify and reduce unsafe practices and take appropriate action to reduce risks and hazards.
  • Use electronic mail, time-and-attendance software, learning-management software, the intranet, telephone, and texting systems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
