View

Billings Flying Service provides heavy-lift helicopter operations and maintenance with a focus on CH-47D Chinook aerial firefighting. It operates the world’s largest civilian-owned Chinook fleet and has specialized CH-47D operations since 2013, serving government contracts (USFS, CALFIRE, Montana DNRC) for firefighting, construction, and utilities. The company runs an FAA Part 145 MRO facility (2019) that services its fleet plus commercial and military customers, specializing in CH-47 drivetrain, dynamics, and hydraulics. In December 2025 BFS joined Quanta Services as the Quanta Aviation Services subsidiary, aiming to access greater resources while maintaining its leadership and culture, with a goal of providing reliable, mission-critical aerial support for public-safety and civil operations.

What believers are saying

  • Quanta closed BFS on December 9, 2025, adding capital and cross-selling channels.
  • DNRC awarded BFS another exclusive-use helicopter contract in 2025, validating its core niche.
  • BFS's August 14, 2026 website touts global aerial firefighting demand and continued contract wins.

What critics are saying

  • Montana DNRC contract ends June 30, 2026, exposing BFS to seasonal revenue gaps.

  • A fatal Chinook accident or FAA grounding would freeze firefighting missions and destroy trust.

What makes Billings Flying Service unique

  • Its in-house tank refills under one minute, boosting drop tempo on active fires.
  • The 2019 Part 145 MRO repairs CH-47 drivetrains for military and commercial customers.
