Lloyd's Register tops KOSHIPA rankings for classification services. * 14 October 2026 * Edited By: Haley McQueen Lloyd's Register (LR) has been ranked first in the latest Korea Offshore & Shipbuilding Association (KOSHIPA) evaluation of classification societies' technical and support services. (Image credit: LR) The annual assessment, conducted by KOSHIPA's Quality Committee and covering the period from August 1, 2025, to July 31, 2026, gathered feedback from seven major Korean shipbuilding companies across a wide range of technical, inspection, and support criteria. LR achieved the highest overall score in the 2026 evaluation, receiving a total score of 82.8 out of 100. The evaluation highlighted several areas of strong performance where LR stood out. Shipbuilders recognized LR's prompt responses to technical matters, clear and practical explanations of requirements, consistent application of rules and regulations, and cooperative approach to inspections and project delivery. Feedback also cited LR's fair and objective comments, as well as its ability to work constructively with yards to resolve technical challenges. The assessment provides a valuable measure of how classification services are experienced by shipyards involved in the design, construction, and delivery of some of the world's most advanced vessels. It was compiled by quality planning and assurance teams alongside specialists from sales engineering, design, and project management functions with direct experience of working with classification societies throughout the shipbuilding process. Mark Darley, Chief Operations Officer, LR, said: "This recognition is particularly meaningful because it comes directly from the shipbuilders we work alongside every day. Korea remains one of the most important centers of global shipbuilding innovation, and achieving the highest overall ranking reflects the dedication, technical expertise and customer focus of our teams across the region and those that support Korean shipbuilding globally." LR, Shell and GTT to explore hybrid-electric 200,000m^3 LNG carrier concept. (L-R) Stephen Brown, Technology Manager, Shell; Francois Michel, Chief Executive Officer of GTT; Andrew McKeran, Chief Growth Officer, Lloyd's Register The project will explore how hybrid-electric propulsion and GTT NEXT1(R) cargo containment system technology could support potential improvements in LNG transport efficiency. Lloyd's Register (LR), Shell and GTT have launched a Joint Development Project (JDP) to develop a conceptual 200,000m^3 LNG carrier combining hybrid-electric propulsion with GTT NEXT1(R) cargo containment technology. By bringing together a larger-capacity vessel concept with hybrid-electric propulsion and GTT NEXT1(R) cargo containment technology, the partners aim to explore how future LNG carrier designs could transport more cargo, operate more efficiently and provide greater flexibility as industry requirements continue to evolve. Under the JDP, the partners will work on the development and safety verification of the vessel's hybrid-electric propulsion system, focusing on system architecture, redundancy philosophy and battery integration, while also exploring the commercial evaluation from a total cost of ownership (TCO) model. In parallel, the integration of GTT NEXT1(R) cargo containment technology will be assessed as part of the overall vessel concept. The project will also establish technical requirements and guidance for hybrid-electric propulsion in LNG carrier applications, helping to support further technical understanding of the technology. Constantinos Chaelis, Global Gas Segment Director, Lloyd's Register, said: "The industry is under increasing pressure to move more energy with lower emissions and greater operational flexibility. Larger vessel concepts are being assessed for their potential, and this project will explore how hybrid-electric propulsion and cargo containment technology can support their technical and operational performance from a TCO perspective. "By bringing together expertise from across the LNG value chain, we're helping to develop technical foundations that could support further assessment of future LNG carrier concepts."

LR and Sagar Defence advance maritime autonomy.

LR and Sagar Defence advance maritime autonomy. 4 hours ago Lloyd's Register and Sagar Defence are teaming up to develop certification pathways supporting the safe deployment of autonomous maritime technologies Lloyd's Register (LR) and Sagar Defence Engineering have teamed up to develop practical pathways for certifying autonomous and remotely operated maritime systems, supporting their safe deployment across commercial, government and defence applications. The partnership will focus on verification, validation, testing, classification readiness and the safety frameworks needed to secure regulatory and operational acceptance. David Lloyd, LR's vice president of naval and government business, said: "Autonomous maritime capability is moving rapidly from experimentation to operational deployment. For the world's leading navies, the decisive question is no longer whether autonomy is technically possible, but whether it can be trusted to perform safely, securely and consistently under demanding mission conditions." The organisations will develop evidence-based approaches covering system integration, trials, certification readiness and in-service assurance. They will also work on operational concepts, mission profiles and safety cases, alongside engagement with regulators, government agencies and industry stakeholders to help shape future certification requirements. Dipali Kuchekar, LR's global director of naval autonomous systems, said assurance must consider how vessels, software, sensors, communications, remote operators and supporting infrastructure function together, including under degraded or failure conditions. The collaboration aims to embed assurance early in development, translating operational requirements into engineering standards and proportionate testing evidence. This approach is intended to give operators, acquisition authorities and regulators greater confidence in autonomous technologies throughout their operational lifecycles. Mridul Babbar, director of Sagar Defence Engineering, said working with LR would strengthen the certification and regulatory foundations needed to support autonomous and remotely operated systems.
