Requirements
  • A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) credential is required.
  • The employee must meet Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services-approved state or national certification requirements within the required state or CMS timeline.
  • The employee must have all applicable state licensure, education, and training required for the role.
  • The employee must successfully complete the organization’s dialysis training program and cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
  • The employee must successfully complete the Ishihara Color Blindness Test as a condition of employment, with reasonable accommodations considered.
  • The employee must be able to perform direct patient care involving heavy lifting and moving patients, assist with ambulation, stand for prolonged periods, bend over, and lift solutions and equipment up to the stated weights.
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility is preferred.
Responsibilities
  • Provide safe and effective dialysis therapy as part of the dialysis health care team under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.
  • Set up and operate hemodialysis machines and maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Support the Quality Enhancement Program and Continuous Quality Improvement activities, including patient satisfaction and process improvement activities.
  • Assist health care team members with patient-specific education regarding adequacy measures, disease processes, and vascular access.
  • Welcome assigned patients and inquire about their wellbeing since their last treatment.
  • Evaluate vascular access patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and administer heparin when delegated or permitted by state law.
  • Obtain pre- and post-treatment vital signs and weights and perform vascular access evaluations.
  • Initiate and discontinue dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders and established procedures.
  • Evaluate intradialytic problems, intervene as prescribed or directed, monitor patient responses, and report significant changes to the registered nurse or supervisor.
  • Calculate and enter dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals, treatment time, and ultrafiltration modeling as prescribed.
  • Ensure appropriate safety alarms are enabled and perform machine safety checks and required pretreatment alarm testing.
  • Record accurate and timely vital signs, treatment parameters, patient treatment information, and intervention responses in the required documentation.
  • Obtain prescribed laboratory tests and prepare, collect, label, store, and arrange courier delivery of laboratory specimens.
  • Clean blood spills and disinfect dialysis machines, chairs, equipment, and surrounding areas between treatments according to facility policy.
  • Prepare, organize, and efficiently use supplies and equipment to prevent waste.
  • Monitor patients performing self-care under registered nurse supervision.
  • Assist in training applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under nurse supervision.
  • Follow organizational business policies, procedures, systems, and ethical business practices.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and aesthetics by ensuring work areas are safe and clean.
  • Complete and document ongoing participation in Continuous Quality Improvement activities.
  • Enter treatment data into the designated clinical application accurately and promptly.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness, ensure nursing signatures are documented, and coordinate correction of omitted entries.
  • Prepare initial patient charts for admission and compile paperwork for chart placement.
  • Prepare and print laboratory requisitions for prescribed or stat laboratory specimens.
  • Collect, label, prepare, and store laboratory samples according to laboratory specifications.
  • Assist with infection control audits, support adherence to infection control practices, follow infection control policies and procedures, and reinforce infection control education under the direction of the clinical manager or designee.
  • Follow newly admitted patients through their first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate their transitional dialysis care.
  • Reinforce education and care information for new patients as permitted by state law.
  • Liaise with appropriate staff members to coordinate patient care and ensure disciplines are scheduled according to plan.
  • Assist patients in understanding home dialysis products, home dialysis benefits, and home dialysis options.
  • Set up and perform treatments on machines used in the transitional care unit.
  • Demonstrate peritoneal dialysis setup and assist patients in understanding treatment options.
  • Assist with coordinating transitions to the patient’s chosen dialysis modality.
  • Assist with supply ordering and inventory for the transitional care unit.
  • Travel between assigned facilities and community locations and attend regional, business unit, or corporate meetings when required.
