Requirements
  • A PhD in Computational Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science with a focus on numerical methods, or a related field, or a Master's degree plus 3 years of highly relevant experience.
  • 0–3 years of post-PhD industry, startup, or postdoctoral experience, or 3–6 years of total experience working in computational science or engineering.
  • Hands-on experience implementing numerical methods for partial differential equations, such as finite element methods, finite volume methods, finite difference methods, particle methods, or mesh-free methods, in research or production environments.
  • Experience with at least one major scientific computing or machine learning framework, such as JAX, PyTorch, or TensorFlow, and one GPU or performance-oriented technology, such as CUDA or PhysicsNEMO.
  • Demonstrated experience speeding up simulations or building surrogate models for physics problems, with quantitative before-and-after results.
  • Demonstrated AI-first workflow using large language models to generate, refactor, and test code.
Responsibilities
  • Design and implement fast physics solvers, such as computational fluid dynamics, thermal, structural, or plasma solvers, for use inside agentic optimization loops.
  • Develop surrogate models, such as physics-informed neural networks, neural operators, and graph neural networks, that approximate high-fidelity simulations at substantially lower cost.
  • Integrate accelerated solvers and surrogate models into the Agentic Computational Engineering platform so AI agents can call them as tools during design and optimization.
  • Work with the Agentic Computational Engineering Applications Lead for Mechanical and Propulsion to identify key regimes and quantities of interest and ensure accelerated models remain physically credible.
  • Create and curate training and validation datasets by coupling commercial or open-source solvers with automated parameter sweeps.
  • Profile and optimize graphics processing unit kernels and numerical pipelines, targeting substantial speedups over baseline codes while preserving required accuracy.
  • Develop test harnesses, benchmarks, and diagnostics that track the accuracy, stability, and performance of accelerated models over time.
  • Use large language models to accelerate boilerplate coding, experiment scripting, and documentation.
  • Use advanced large language models and tooling to assist with complex mathematics and numerical simulation generation.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, heat transfer, or plasma physics applied to aerospace or propulsion systems.
  • Experience with electrical, power, and electromagnetic simulations applied to printed circuit board or radio frequency systems.
  • Prior work on physics-informed neural networks, neural operators such as Fourier neural operators and universal neural operators, or other machine-learning-based surrogates for physical systems.
  • Experience coupling commercial or open-source solvers such as Ansys, COMSOL, Star-CCM+, or OpenFOAM with custom automation or optimization code.
  • Familiarity with differentiable programming and adjoint methods for design optimization.
  • A track record of side projects, open-source contributions, or competition results demonstrating deep enthusiasm for computational physics and performance engineering.
