Requirements
  • A Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited college of pharmacy is required.
  • Must be a Registered Pharmacist in Rhode Island and maintain a current unrestricted Rhode Island pharmacist license.
  • Must maintain current American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications for assigned emergency code blue response responsibilities.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Post Graduate Year 2 residency in the area of specialty and national board certification in that specialty are required when applicable and available; otherwise, national Board Certification in Pharmacotherapy is preferred. Clinical experience, knowledge, and development may be considered in lieu of formal training.
  • Must have effective written and verbal interpersonal and communication skills to interact appropriately with patients, families, colleagues, and others.
  • Must have effective organizational and presentation skills.
  • Must know area-specific technology, including pharmacy information systems, automated dispensing technology, software, equipment, and automation.
  • Must have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, and web browsers.
  • Must be able to provide care to neonatal, child, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients while considering aging processes, human development stages, and cultural patterns.
  • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods and have visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer.
  • Occasional travel between facilities or sites is required.
  • Must be able to work Monday through Friday on the first shift, with every fourth weekend.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and oversee new and established pharmacy clinical services.
  • Implement, interpret, and provide consultation on policies, procedures, and standards of practice related to medication use.
  • Review and analyze pharmacy clinical services, and recommend and implement changes, resource allocation, and new technologies to improve pharmacy efficiency and service levels.
  • Participate in developing, implementing, and integrating patient-focused medication therapy management and pharmaceutical care services with pharmacy leadership and clinical practice stakeholders.
  • Monitor drugs and therapeutic classes targeted for review and implement corrective strategies to optimize drug use in accordance with clinical usage guidelines.
  • Coach professional staff on pharmaceutical care and pharmacoeconomic principles to facilitate safe and cost-effective medication use.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and real-time resource in the area of specialty.
  • Participate in developing short- and long-term pharmacy service goals aligned with the organization's mission and values.
  • Provide input into drug budgeting and resource allocation using pharmacoeconomic principles and methods; monitor drug-utilization projections and recommend corrective strategies.
  • Ensure pharmacy clinical services and programs support standards of care, meet patient-care quality standards, comply with regulatory agencies, and consider age-specific patient needs.
  • Maintain computerized systems, software, specialized equipment, and technologies used in drug information and evaluation processes.
  • Coordinate medication-use quality improvement programs and related database maintenance, including adverse drug reaction reporting, pharmacist clinical interventions, and medication-use evaluations.
  • Participate in assessing department personnel qualifications and competence and developing tools and standards to improve staff competency in therapeutic specialties.
  • Participate in new-employee orientation, in-service training, and continuing-education programs.
  • Communicate drug information accurately in writing and verbally to staff, management, and customers, and communicate quality-improvement activities, goals, and objectives.
  • Educate and train pharmacy residents, pharmacy students, nurses, physician assistants, and medical students and residents; provide didactic lectures and serve as an assigned preceptor.
  • Provide appropriate oversight for pharmacy internship rotations and complete applicable competency and evaluation documentation.
  • Present formal lectures to pharmacists, other health professionals, and the public as assigned.
  • Support academic affiliations, including serving as clinical faculty and lecturing for pharmacy, nursing, and physician assistant programs as assigned.
  • Maintain current specialty competence through independent study, participation in professional organizations, continuing education, and training or retraining as needed.
  • Participate in risk management, practice-performance improvement, quality measures, continuous quality improvement, and total quality management; identify system changes that could improve operations and efficiency.
  • Lead or participate in relevant committees, task forces, and performance-improvement teams as assigned.
  • Prepare papers for professional organization meetings, submit manuscripts to professional journals, and author articles for the Pharmacy website.
  • Conduct pharmacy practice, clinical, and data-related research aligned with organizational mission, goals, and priorities; author research-based abstracts and scholarly papers for publication or presentation.
  • Participate in developing a strategic vision for the department and clinical practice setting.
  • Plan and organize priorities for effective patient care and clinical pharmacy services within departmental and organizational policies.
  • Perform pharmacist duties, including preparing and dispensing medication and providing drug information.
  • Participate in emergency code blue response.
  • Perform Supervisor-in-Charge duties when assigned.
  • Provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy coverage for adult inpatient solid tumor oncology, hematology/oncology teams, and inpatient consult services.
  • Participate in daily interdisciplinary rounds with the Solid Oncology teaching team and serve as primary clinical pharmacist for the non-teaching Solid Oncology service.
  • Manage pharmacotherapy for patients with solid malignancies, including antineoplastic therapy, supportive care, immune-related adverse events, and prevention and mitigation of chemotherapy-related toxicities.
  • Support the autologous transplant program as a designated Bone Marrow Transplant pharmacist.
  • Develop, revise, implement, and maintain oncology clinical guidelines, standard operating procedures, treatment plans, and medication-use processes.
  • Represent pharmacy on the Oncology Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee by presenting formulary reviews, drug-class evaluations, and medication-use recommendations.
  • Precept inpatient solid tumor and hematologic oncology learning experiences in the PGY2 Oncology Pharmacy Residency and PGY1 Pharmacy Residency programs.
  • Facilitate longitudinal oncology topic discussions, mentor residents on oncology research and quality-improvement projects, and precept pharmacy practice experience students.
Desired Qualifications
  • Advanced study in pharmacy or a healthcare-related field, preferably a master's degree or comparable work experience.
  • Board Certification in Oncology Pharmacy is expected within the organization's standard timeframe following hire.
  • Active professional engagement through organizations such as the Hematology/Oncology Pharmacy Association and other relevant national pharmacy and oncology organizations.
