Unlike some mass retailers, Bass Pro Shops emphasizes an experiential shopping environment and outdoor lifestyle branding tied to hands-on gear and boating. Its goal is to be the leading destination for outdoor enthusiasts in North America, making outdoor recreation accessible and enjoyable while growing its retail network and brand presence.

What believers are saying

  • Opening a 148,000-square-foot mega adventure store in San Diego County in 2028 will serve the region's saltwater and freshwater anglers.
  • Acquiring Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada expands the nature-based resorts division near World Wide Sportsman Store and Marina.
  • Plans for a 130,000-square-foot New York Metropolitan store in Hicksville will create 200 jobs and cost $65 million in construction.

What critics are saying

  • Private label overreliance stifles innovation, with 70% of fishing gear inventory being private label, suppressing premium partnerships.
  • Flat traditional store sales for over three years cause market share erosion amid stagnant foot traffic and low growth.
  • Resort expansion diverts capital from core retail, straining liquidity for new store openings like San Diego and Hicksville.

What makes Bass Pro Shops unique

  • Bass Pro Shops dominates the hunt-fish-camp niche by doubling down on immersive outdoor experiences rather than generic retail.
  • The brand combines retail with museum-like displays, aquariums, dining, and hotels to create a destination resembling Walt Disney World.
  • Its strategy hinges on three pillars: immersive stores, curated products with strong private brands, and omnichannel reach for outdoor enthusiasts.

Bass Pro Shops acquires historic Cheeca Lodge in Florida Keys.

Bass Pro Shops acquires historic Cheeca Lodge in Florida Keys. June 16, 2026 Bass Pro Shops has agreed to acquire the iconic Cheeca Lodge, one of the most historic fishing and sporting resorts in the Florida Keys for an undisclosed price. The acquisition was made through the company's nature-based resorts division. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. "Long recognized as a gathering place for anglers, adventurers and families seeking the timeless spirit of the Keys, Cheeca Lodge has welcomed generations of visitors drawn to Islamorada's world-famous waters, natural beauty, and laid-back hospitality," the company said in a release announcing the acquisition. "Bass Pro Shops and its founder, passionate angler and noted conservationist, Johnny Morris, are excited to enhance the resort while preserving its authentic character and heritage of connecting guests to the natural beauty of the Florida Keys." The company said this philosophy will guide the future of Cheeca Lodge. "Cheeca Lodge reinforces Bass Pro Shops' ongoing commitment to hospitality through world-class nature-based properties," Bass Pro continued. "Referred to as America's Premier Wilderness Resort, Bass Pro's flagship Big Cedar Lodge in the Missouri Ozarks hosts 7.5 million guests annually." In keeping with the founder's commitment to conservation, over half of the resort's 24,000 acres has been donated and forever preserved as part of the not-for-profit Johnny Morris Conservation Foundation. "I have been very blessed to have spent my entire life around the great sport of fishing," added Johnny Morris. "Growing up as far from the ocean as you can get in the Missouri Ozark Mountains, fly-fishing beautiful streams for perch and smallmouth bass. I will never forget dreaming about and then getting to catch my first tarpon on a fly. I was 16 years old fishing with my best buddy, my Dad and Captain Sonny Eslinger on Buchanan Bank out of Bud N' Mary's Marina. From that special day forward, like many others, I have come to have enormous respect for the history of Islamorada, and the generations of anglers and families who have made memories here or who are blessed to call the Keys home. We're humbled and honored to have the opportunity to help protect it and carry that story forward." As recipient of the Audubon Medal, Morris is "especially excited that Cheeca Lodge, in addition to its world-class fishing, can be further celebrated as an expanded adventure outpost to connect visitors to the amazing natural treasures of the Everglades and Florida Keys." "Johnny and Bass Pro Shops have always understood the importance of protecting the Everglades and celebrating our fishing heritage, making them outstanding partners for the future of the Keys," said Eric Eikenberg, CEO, The Everglades Foundation. Cheeca Lodge will also reportedly unite with World Wide Sportsman Store and Marina, which overlooks Florida Bay with direct access to the Everglades and the Gulf Stream. The Islamorada Fish Company, Morada Bay and Pierre's restaurants, located adjacent to the landmark Store & Marina, provide waterfront dining. Originally founded in 1967 by legendary anglers George Hommell, Jr. and Billy Pate, World Wide Sportsman quickly became a premier, world reknown saltwater specialist shop. Make-A-Wish Southern Florida grants wish of fishing boat to 12-year-old boy who battled cancer.

Make-A-Wish Southern Florida grants wish of fishing boat to 12-year-old boy who battled cancer. June 1, 2026 DANIA BEACH, FLA. (WSVN) - A South Florida boy got a big surprise and a dream come true, thanks to the partnership of Make-A-Wish Southern Florida and Bass Pro Shops. The 12-year-old from Pompano Beach took a trip to Dania Beach for the kind of surprise that checks off a major bucket list item. 7News cameras captured the moment Benjamin Rodrigues was presented with his very own fishing boat that he had wished for a very long time. "Oh my God, oh my God!" said Rodrigues as he covered his mouth in awe and walked closer to the boat. The generous gift from the organization is aimed at helping the young boy work toward his goal of becoming a sport fisherman. The child bravely battled leukemia for the past year. From hospital visits to chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant, he was sidelined for a while. "He's only 12, but he definitely has a purpose, and he definitely has that in mind. Some good days and some bad days, and you wish it wouldn't have happened, but he's been able to rebound," said Rodrigues' father, Lucas. Now, after surviving those hardships, he's ready to pursue his dream in the water. "It's like wow! So surreal to me," said Rodrigues. "I was feeling like just, 'Am I dreaming? Is this real?" Chris Smeeton, General Manager at Bass Pro Shops in Dania Beach, said it was amazing to see the young boy's reaction. "To see his face, to see the wow on his face and again knowing he's going to be on the water with his brothers and his family, you know, again making memories, that's what it's all about," he said. Lucas said that the year in the hospital introduced the family to the cancer community, from the hospitals providing medical care to a network of families and generous donors who make moments like these possible. "What me and my wife who came to find out is that we didn't know much about the cancer community and it's an amazing community, supportive community," said Lucas. The young boy said he's grateful for the gift. "I want to thank Make-A-Wish because a boat is not something that's, you know, cheap or easy to get, but they did it. They did it for me because I'm struggling with cancer, so I just want to thank you guys so much," said Rodrigues. Smeeton said the only thing he wants to see now is pictures of Ben and his family on the water.
