About the company

AtmosZero makes modular electrified boilers that generate decarbonized steam for industrial processes. The boilers convert electricity and ambient heat into steam, serving as a drop-in replacement for traditional fossil-fuel boilers and can be deployed in a plug-and-play, scalable way with optional leasing and maintenance. Compared with others, AtmosZero focuses on a straightforward path to decarbonization by offering a fossil-free, plug-and-play steam solution that fits existing plants with minimal changes. Its goal is to help heavy industries cut carbon emissions and achieve climate targets by providing practical, cost-effective zero-emission steam.

What believers are saying

  • New Belgium's 650-kilowatt pilot has delivered steam since May 2025, proving field operation.
  • AtmosZero opened its 100,000-square-foot Loveland factory in 2025, targeting 100 units annually.
  • Colorado and federal incentives supplied $3.2 million DOE funding and up to $24.3 million tax credits.

What critics are saying

  • AtmosZero still targets volume deliveries in 2027, leaving a long commercial gap after pilot success.
  • The New York Empire Technology Prize installation remains in negotiation, delaying a visible reference customer.
  • If gas boiler incumbents and electric-resistance systems underprice Boiler 2.0, AtmosZero's factory becomes stranded.

What makes AtmosZero unique

  • AtmosZero's Boiler 2.0 uses modular heat-pump steam, replacing combustion boilers in existing plants.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries invested in March 2026, validating industrial OEM distribution and supply-chain access.
  • R.F. MacDonald Co. partnership in February 2026 opens boiler-room sales channels across California and Nevada.

Heat Pump to Decarbonize Industrial Steam | ARPA-E

AtmosZero, in partnership with Colorado State University, seeks to develop a modular high-temperature heat pump system with the potential to significantly reduce carbon emissions from on-site heat generation in the U.S. industrial sector. Approximately 75% of all on-site energy consumption in the U.S. manufacturing sector is used to generate heat, which means industrial process heat must be decarbonized to substantially reduce U.S. emissions.
