Requirements
  • Current certification and registration as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities for grades B-2, 1-6, 7-12 and/or all grades, or permanent special education certification, issued by the New York State Education Department.
  • A bachelor's degree in education or a closely related field and active pursuit of master's-level education in a New York State Registered Program for a Special Education Teacher's Certificate or equivalent, with anticipated completion and receipt of certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities within five years of appointment.
  • Two years of experience in childcare, social services, healthcare and/or another school-based role.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, multitask, and meet deadlines.
  • Highly flexible personality type.
Responsibilities
  • Oversee a classroom of school-aged children ages 3 to 21 with brain-based disabilities and/or other intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Prepare lessons and teach students, providing instructional and behavioral management support individually and in small groups.
  • Incorporate social skills into daily lesson plans and activities.
  • Collaborate with each student's school therapy team and implement therapy recommendations to support optimal treatment.
  • Prepare and document annual academic goals for students and compile quarterly progress reports.
  • Participate in the Individualized Education Program process, including Individualized Education Program meetings and team meetings or legal hearings when necessary and appropriate.
  • Communicate and collaborate with parents regularly and involve them in their child's activities and progress.
  • Provide direction, support, and supervision to paraprofessionals, teacher assistants, and/or Associate Special Education Teachers in the classroom.
  • Use a multisensory approach incorporating art, music, and technology to design lessons that increase students' literacy, numeracy, communication, social, and life skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • A master's degree in special education is strongly preferred.
  • Current New York State certification and registration as a special education teacher is preferred.
  • Previous experience with school-aged children with special needs is preferred.

Yai's Manhattan Star Academy (MSA) is a private, non-profit day school within the YAI Network that serves students aged 3 to 21 with developmental disabilities. It combines academics with therapies (occupational, physical, speech, counseling) in a Montessori-inspired, developmentally based curriculum, using small classes and sensory-friendly facilities with technology to track progress. The school includes a transition and vocational program to prepare students for life after graduation. Its differentiators are the integrated therapeutic model, a specialized environment for neuro-developmental needs, and a continuous education path from early years through post-secondary readiness.
