Requirements
  • Associate's degree in a human service related field
  • 2 years of experience in human services
  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Availability to work a flexible work schedule including evenings and weekends
  • Effective communication and teaching skills
  • Ability to empathize with patients, families and/or support systems
Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient engagement and support in the inpatient psychiatry milieu in collaboration with an interdisciplinary clinical team to facilitate engagement and safety.
  • Engage patients by actively listening, building rapport, and trust with active presence in the patient milieu.
  • Effectively communicate with patients, providing information on what to expect while staying in an inpatient unit to facilitate mitigation of frustrations.
  • Navigate complex and emotional patient expressions by processing and utilizing activities to develop rapport (e.g., games, television, coloring) with patients in the milieu.
  • Gather non-nursing items for patients (food, drinks, scrubs, socks, hygiene items, etc.).
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and PSOs by monitoring patient interactions and facilitating verbal de-escalation using Crisis Prevention Institute techniques.
  • Identify potential risks and early signs of escalating patient behaviors to offer interventions sooner and reduce use of restraint/seclusion.
  • Facilitate patient completion of the PIX Inpatient Experience Survey and other unit quality improvement efforts.
  • Participate in ongoing staff development programs, workshops, and seminars; implement orientation and training for staff development including training of new Patient Engagement Specialists.
  • Model ICARE Values, support diversity and inclusion strategies, reduce stigma, engage patients, and promote patient-driven decision making.

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience in a psychiatric crisis or emergency setting (preferred)
  • Ability to speak Spanish, Vietnamese or be fluent in American Sign Language (preferred)
