Requirements
  • Graduate from or complete a program that meets eligibility requirements for registry or certification, or currently hold the required registry or certification.
  • For technologists initially qualifying on or after April 28, 1999, complete at least 40 hours of documented mammography training to meet mammography-specific requirements.
  • For Level I, obtain American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification at the time of employment.
  • Perform at least 25 mammography examinations under the direct supervision of an appropriate Mammography Quality Standards Act-qualified individual.
  • Complete at least 8 hours of training in each modality, such as digital mammography, before using that modality independently.
  • For Level II, have at least two years of experience as a mammography technologist and perform at least 200 mammography examinations in a 24-month period.
  • For Level III, have at least four years of experience within the specialty modality for which promotion is sought.
  • Hold American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification in radiography.
  • Hold American Registry of Radiologic Technologists advanced certification in mammography.
  • Be Food and Drug Administration and Mammography Quality Standards Act qualified, including at least 15 continuing education units in a 36-month period and at least 6 continuing education units in each mammographic modality used.
  • Hold Basic Life Support certification.
Responsibilities
  • Operate mammographic radiographic equipment and other appropriate equipment or devices.
  • Position patients and use immobilization when necessary.
  • Calculate exposure factors and assist physicians.
  • Perform mammography-related quality-control functions.
  • Evaluate radiographs for diagnostic quality and obtain additional images as needed.
  • Prepare and set up medical supplies using aseptic techniques when appropriate.
  • Explain procedures to patients.
  • Charge mammography procedures and supplies in Maestro or Epic.
  • Provide orientation to new mammographers.
  • Provide education and training to student mammographers.
  • Assist with maintenance and compilation of statistical data.
  • Perform all breast-imaging procedures, including breast interventional procedures.
  • Monitor mammography-section procedures and supply charges for completeness and accuracy.
  • Perform other duties incidental to the work.
