Top 5 female-led fintech firms.

Top 5 female-led fintech firms. By Vanes Bennett August 24, 2026 Female founders still receive a tiny fraction of venture capital in fintech - roughly one percent in the UK and three percent in the US - yet a handful of companies led by women have broken through to scale. These firms range from digital banks and pension consolidators to investment platforms built specifically around the financial lives of women. What follows is a look at five of the most prominent female-fronted fintech companies operating today, based on their recent milestones and public positioning. PensionBee heads to the London Stock Exchange. British pensions provider PensionBee is preparing to go public on the London Stock Exchange, with the float expected to value the firm at between £346m and £384m. Founded by Romi Savova in 2014, the company consolidates old pensions into a single new plan, managed through a smartphone app. Savova, 35, holds a 45 percent stake in the business, which would make her one of the UK's wealthiest female technology CEOs. The company has been described as "the Monzo of pensions" for its efforts to drag a famously complex industry into the digital age. The listing is a rare public-market exit for a female-founded fintech, and it comes when most venture dollars in the sector still flow to male-led teams. Whether that translates into a lasting shift for other women founders remains an open question, but the valuation alone signals that investors see real demand for simpler pension tools. Starling Bank's unicorn moment and Anne Boden's tell-all. Digital-only challenger bank Starling achieved unicorn status after raising £272m in its largest funding round to date, a cash injection that valued the British bank at £1.1bn. Founder and CEO Anne Boden said in a statement that "digital banking has reached a tipping point." Boden, who founded the bank in 2014 at age 54 after years in traditional banking, has seen Starling become one of the UK's fastest growing banks, with a new customer joining every 39 seconds. In November 2020, she published Banking On It, a memoir detailing her struggles as a 50-something woman trying to forge a new path in a competitive industry. Borrowell brings credit scores to Canadians for free. Canadian fintech Borrowell, founded in 2014, focuses on helping people make informed decisions about credit, whether that means clearing debt or saving for the future. The company was the first in Canada to offer customers free access to their credit scores, and it later launched the country's first AI-powered credit coach. Co-founder and COO Eva Wong has been a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion, particularly around hiring practices - she has spoken about using inclusive language in job postings to attract a broader candidate pool. Borrowell has been listed as one of the Best Workplaces for Women by Great Place to Work Canada. The company's mission gained urgency during the COVID-19 economic downturn, as more Canadians faced financial strain and needed clearer visibility into their credit health. Ellevest targets women investors. Trading app Ellevest, founded by Wall Street veteran Sallie Krawcheck in 2014, markets itself as a tool built by women, for women. Its investment algorithm accounts for issues that disproportionately affect female investors, such as career breaks, longer average life spans and pay gaps. The firm's rise comes against the backdrop of the GameStop trading frenzy, which thrust retail investing into the headlines earlier this year - though Ellevest's approach is less about day-trading hype and more about long-term wealth building. Krawcheck, a former Citigroup and Bank of America executive, has been one of the most visible figures in the push to close the investing gender gap. Her argument has been that traditional financial advice often fails women because it doesn't account for their different financial timelines. Ovamba Solutions targets Africa's SME credit gap. Founded by Viola Llewellyn in 2013, Ovamba Solutions provides short-term capital to micro, small and medium-sized businesses across Africa. Llewellyn set up the company after noticing that banks and traditional financial institutions were largely unable to close the continent's credit gap. Ovamba's offerings include culturally-sensitive technology, such as chatbots that speak a variety of African languages, and solutions designed around the realities facing African entrepreneurs. The firm's focus on SMEs puts it in a different category from the consumer-facing apps on this list, but it addresses a similar problem: access to financial services that actually fit the user's circumstances. The company's growth has been slower than some of its peers, but its niche - bridging formal finance and informal business practice - remains largely underserved.
