About the company

BlackRock manages money for pension funds, governments, insurers, and everyday savers, and sells the software it uses to run those investments to other firms. In 2009, its purchase of Barclays Global Investors brought in the iShares fund family and made BlackRock the world's largest asset manager. Its iShares exchange-traded funds trade like stocks and mostly track market indexes, while its private funds lend to companies and invest in infrastructure and real estate. BlackRock charges a yearly fee on the money it manages, and banks, insurers, and other investors pay to use Aladdin, its system for measuring risk and running portfolios. Larry Fink and seven partners founded BlackRock in 1988, and it is based in New York City.

What believers are saying

  • Growth accelerated: clients added a record net $321 billion from January to June 2026, over double a year earlier.
  • Engineers are in demand: 97 of 315 open BlackRock jobs in October 2026 were in engineering or technology.
  • Private markets are the growth bet: BlackRock aims to raise $400 billion for private funds from 2025 through 2030.

What critics are saying

  • Its biggest rival took the US ETF lead: Vanguard passed BlackRock in June 2026, ending BlackRock's run since 2003.
  • Job cuts are routine: June 2026's roughly 200 layoffs were BlackRock's fourth round in 18 months.
  • Private lending is under strain: BlackRock's $26 billion HPS fund met about half of withdrawal requests in March 2026.

What makes BlackRock unique

  • Alternatives earn outsized fees: private and hedge funds were 3% of long-term assets but 17% of 2025 management fees.
  • Other investors pay to use its software: technology revenue, mostly from Aladdin, rose 24% to $2.0 billion in 2025.
  • Washington calls it in crises: BlackRock priced AIG's troubled assets in 2008 and ran Fed bond purchases in 2020.

BlackRock expands AI push with new robotics ETF as investor enthusiasm cools.

BlackRock expands AI push with new robotics ETF as investor enthusiasm cools. ETMarkets.com Last Updated: Oct 22, 2026, 01:18:00 AM IST BlackRock has launched a new robotics focused ETF as investors become more selective about AI investments. The fund targets companies using intelligent machines across industries such as manufacturing and transportation, adding to a rapidly expanding market of ETFs built around different parts of the AI theme. BlackRock has added another AI focused exchange traded fund to its growing lineup, turning to robotics as investors become more selective about where they place their bets on the technology theme, according to Reuters. The global asset manager launched the iShares Future Robotics and Related Technologies ETF on Wednesday, targeting companies that use intelligent machines to automate repetitive tasks across industries including transportation and manufacturing. As on 22 Oct 2026, 01:00 AM IST S&P 500 top losers. AT&T 21.96(-6.23%) Robotics seen as next leg of AI adoption. BlackRock sees robotics as an important part of the next phase of AI adoption, with intelligent machines potentially extending the technology's reach beyond software and data centres into a wider range of industries. The new fund comes as investors' enthusiasm for AI has encountered bouts of volatility. BlackRock US head of equity ETFs Jay Jacobs said the recent swings showed that AI exposure is becoming a more complicated investment theme, Reuters reported. "Recent volatility is a reminder that AI is not a single trade and that investors need to be deliberate about where and how they take exposure," Jacobs said. He added that the volatility had not changed BlackRock's conviction in the broader AI theme. AI ETF market keeps expanding. The new fund also adds to an increasingly crowded market of ETFs built around the AI investment story. Investors already have access to scores of ETFs explicitly tracking AI, alongside technology focused funds with significant exposure to major AI linked companies such as Nvidia and Micron, according to Reuters. At least six AI linked ETFs have launched over the past month, with several targeting specific corners of the industry rather than taking a broad approach. Global X recently introduced the LLM ETF, focused on companies developing large language models, while Defiance launched an ETF targeting bonds issued by AI infrastructure companies, Reuters reported. Jacobs said expectations around AI can change quickly, while adoption may develop unevenly and market risk remains concentrated among a relatively narrow group of companies. "Expectations can shift quickly, adoption can develop unevenly and market risk remains concentrated in a relatively narrow group of companies," he said. Emirates NBD and BlackRock launch income funds for retail clients.

Emirates NBD and BlackRock launch income funds for retail clients. BlackRock sub-manages one fund and advises on the other as the partnership opens to Emirates NBD retail clients. Get the hottest Fintech Middle East News once a month in your Inbox Emirates NBD Asset Management and BlackRock have launched two income funds to mark one year of their partnership. The partnership began in 2025 with private market products for professional clients. It now covers public funds open to retail investors in the region. In its first year, it drew USD 350 million in assets under management. The first product is the FundStar Emirates CLO AA Fund, which BlackRock sub-manages. It pays income at a floating rate by investing in collateralised loan obligations (CLOs), which are backed by senior secured loans to firms in the US and Europe. According to the companies, the fund aims for an average AA credit rating and holds nothing rated below investment grade. Investors can access their money daily, and the fund uses no leverage. BlackRock has over 24 years of CLO experience and manages more than USD 40 billion in CLO strategies. The second product is the Emirates Systematic Income and Growth Fund. Rather than tracking a benchmark, it invests in income-paying assets around the world. It targets a 7% payout after fees, paid quarterly. For this fund, BlackRock acts as investment adviser, while Emirates NBD Asset Management runs the portfolio. Both funds are now open to Emirates NBD's wealth and retail clients. Michail Samawi, Senior Executive Officer at Emirates NBD Asset Management, said the two new funds are intended to widen access to global investments and help clients build income-generating portfolios that match their long-term financial goals. Keith Saldanha, Head of Wealth and Global Product Solutions for the Middle East and Africa at BlackRock, said he sees room for both CLO and systematic strategies in wealth portfolios, and that the two firms plan to keep developing products that give investors in the region a wider range of options.
