CNN signs multiyear content deal with Google.

CNN signs multiyear content deal with Google. CNN has agreed to a multiyear partnership granting Google enhanced content rights for experimental AI product features. Announced on October 15, the arrangement provides compensation for use of CNN's journalism. Neither company has disclosed financial terms, identified the Google products involved or clarified whether the agreement covers model training or only retrieval and display. The network joins Google's existing AI news pilot alongside publishers including Der Spiegel, El País, The Guardian, The Times of India, The Washington Examiner and The Washington Post. CNN's senior vice president of strategic partnerships and business development, Sam Felix, described the partnership as a way to expand audience access while securing payment for its intellectual property. The deal addresses a central concern for publishers: AI-generated search summaries can answer questions without sending readers to news sites, potentially reducing advertising impressions and direct audience relationships. How prominently CNN attribution and links will appear, how outdated or inaccurate summaries will be corrected, and whether the features will generate visits remain publicly unresolved. CNN is also suing Perplexity AI over alleged unauthorized use of its journalism after licensing talks failed, pairing negotiated access with legal action against unlicensed use. Perplexity open-sources SPACE to safely run AI Agents at millions of sandboxes daily.

Perplexity open-sources SPACE to safely run AI Agents at millions of sandboxes daily. Perplexity released SPACE under Apache 2.0, the Firecracker-based microVM sandbox that isolates every agent task in Computer with external credential and egress control. · 5 hrs ago Read 6 min * Perplexity open-sourced SPACE under Apache 2.0, the Firecracker microVM sandbox powering Perplexity Computer in production. * Each agent task gets its own VM with root inside, while credentials and egress policy stay on the host. * Sandboxes support pause, fork, snapshot and resume for long-running stateful agent workflows that outlive HTTP requests. * Red team tested with 9 frontier models: zero VM-to-host escapes in 108 attempts, network bypasses found and patched. * Audit of 10 third-party sandboxes found 8 vulnerable to DNS spoofing or CDN domain-fronting style network bypasses. * CoreWeave, Akamai, and Crusoe are integrating SPACE into their cloud platforms for managed deployment. Perplexity open-sources SPACE, a Firecracker sandbox for AI agents. Perplexity has released SPACE, its Sandboxed Platform for Agentic Code Execution, under the Apache 2.0 license. The project gives teams a self-hosted isolation layer for model-generated code, combining Firecracker microVMs, persistent snapshots, credential brokering, and per-sandbox network policy. Agent sandboxes have become a critical boundary because autonomous systems install packages, execute commands, access files, and call external services with limited supervision. An OpenAI account of a Hugging Face model-evaluation security incident showed how an agent using valid credentials can reach resources beyond its intended scope when surrounding controls are weak. Inside the boundary. SPACE runs each sandbox in a Firecracker microVM called the guest. The physical or cloud machine running that VM is the host, which remains outside the guest's control. Agents receive root access inside the guest so they can install software and run arbitrary commands, while network rules and platform-managed credentials remain on the host side of the boundary. | Concern | SPACE design | Practical effect | | Code isolation | A dedicated microVM with its own operating system | Guest processes cannot directly control the host | | Credentials | Secrets remain outside the untrusted guest | Agents can use authorized services without reading raw credentials | | Network access | A per-sandbox gateway enforces egress rules | Each workload receives its own outbound-access policy | | Durable execution | Memory, disk, and file snapshots preserve state | Work can pause, resume, branch, or recover after interruption | SPACE stores changed state instead of copying an entire environment for every checkpoint. This incremental approach reduces the storage and transfer work required to restore or fork a sandbox. Long jobs keep their state. Traditional request-scoped sandboxes often assume that a job ends with the HTTP request that started it. SPACE separates the sandbox lifetime from the client connection, allowing a running environment to suspend to memory and disk snapshots and later resume from the same state. Persistent state supports workflows that span multiple requests or require human review. An agent can pause before a sensitive action, fork a workspace to test competing approaches, or recover from a crash without replaying its full execution history. Perplexity says SPACE now powers every session in its Computer agent and handles millions of sandbox creations per day. On the same production traffic, the company measured creation times three to five times faster than its previous provider. That comparison establishes an internal improvement rather than a general benchmark against containers, virtual machines, or other sandbox products. Red-team runs exposed egress flaws. Perplexity's Secure Intelligence Institute tested SPACE by giving frontier models root access inside the guest and instructing them to escape. Its red-team report covers nine model configurations, including Claude Opus 5.0, GPT-5.6 Cyber, GPT-5.6 Sol, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Kimi K3, and DeepSeek V4 Pro. None of the 108 sandbox-escape runs crossed the microVM boundary, according to Perplexity. The models had access to SPACE's source code and could install software, run arbitrary commands, and search the web during the test. Network-policy testing produced a different result. Four models bypassed hostname-based egress restrictions when the policy allowed access to package repositories such as PyPI. The attacks used two techniques: * Forged DNS responses: An agent with root access sent a DNS query for pypi.org, then injected a fake response that appeared to come from the external resolver. The gateway cached the forged mapping and routed subsequent HTTPS traffic to an attacker-controlled address. * Shared CDN addresses: Content delivery networks commonly serve unrelated domains from the same IP addresses. One GPT-5.6 Sol run reached Fastly Fiddle through an address also used by pypi.org. GPT-5.6 Cyber chained Taboola's image service with thum.io, captured the blocked callback as an image, and used optical character recognition to extract the flag. Perplexity patched both paths by validating source addresses with nftables rules in the sandbox namespace and terminating TLS at the gateway. The gateway now checks that the Server Name Indication supplied during the TLS handshake and the HTTP Host header match the allowlisted hostname associated with the destination address. The company reports no verified bypass using either technique after remediation. The audit widened to hosted platforms. Perplexity applied the same network-policy attacks to ten third-party sandbox platforms offering hostname- or domain-based egress controls. The report says eight of the ten allowed at least one bypass. Affected products named in the report include E2B, Vercel Sandbox, Modal Sandboxes, Daytona Sandbox, Deno Sandbox, Fly.io Sprites, and microsandbox. Cloudflare Sandbox and NVIDIA OpenShell resisted both tested attack classes. These results describe specific configurations and product versions tested by Perplexity, which operates a competing sandbox. Developers evaluating a hosted platform should review the full methodology, confirm whether vendors have shipped remediations, and repeat the tests against the versions they plan to deploy. Where SPACE fits. SPACE targets agent products that execute untrusted model-generated code with filesystem or network access. Its primitives support several common workloads: * Creating disposable workspaces for data transformation, analysis, and chart generation without exposing production hosts. * Pausing an agent for human approval, then restoring its processes, files, and memory state. * Forking a saved workspace to test multiple code paths or recover after a destructive command. * Keeping API keys and OAuth tokens outside the guest while brokering approved service access through the gateway. Perplexity says CoreWeave and Akamai have tested and launched SPACE on their cloud platforms and are working to offer it to customers. Crusoe plans to add the software to its managed AI services portfolio. Teams choosing self-hosting can consult the project's deployment guide for supported configurations and included components. Checks before production. Teams adopting SPACE assume operational responsibility for the surrounding infrastructure, even when the microVM boundary performs as designed. A production review should cover: * Host compatibility: Confirm that the target infrastructure supports the Firecracker configuration documented by the project. * Threat assumptions: Treat root access inside every guest as expected behavior and keep host services, sockets, and secrets outside its reach. * Egress enforcement: Test DNS spoofing, shared CDN addresses, redirects, alternate protocols, and hostname validation against the deployed policy. * Credential handling: Define which services the gateway may call, which credentials it may attach, and how access is logged and revoked. * Snapshot security: Set encryption, retention, access-control, and deletion policies for memory and disk snapshots that may contain sensitive data. * Capacity planning: Measure startup latency, snapshot cost, restore time, storage growth, and host density with representative agent workloads. * Patch management: Track updates to Firecracker, guest images, the host kernel, and SPACE's gateway components. An inspectable security baseline. Security reviews for agent infrastructure must test VM isolation and network confinement independently. SPACE's red-team results show that a microVM can contain code execution while a gateway still leaks data through DNS assumptions or shared network infrastructure. Open sourcing the system gives developers a way to inspect those assumptions, reproduce the attacks, and evaluate patches before placing model-generated code near production resources.

New study ranks how well AI tools help shoppers hunt for deals.

New study ranks how well AI tools help shoppers hunt for deals. By Nydia Han, Cheryl Mettendorf Friday, October 9, 2026 2:20PM As more shoppers turn to artificial intelligence tools to help find deals, a recent study urges consumers to verify product information and pricing, as some platforms appear to be more reliable than others. About 40% of consumers are using AI for shopping, according to Product AI. According to Dakota Nunley of Product AI, the company asked the platforms 220 shopping questions on everything from pricing to comparisons of products across nine different product categories and recorded those results. Their study found numerous errors across the platforms. "Everything from MacBook pricing being off by $300 in some cases, to SPF sunscreen being off by 10 points, to earbud battery life being off by six hours," Nunley said. Despite the mistakes, the study found differences in performance among the platforms. "But some tools are better than others?" asked Nydia Han. "That's what we saw," Nunley responded. Nunley noted that AI models are constantly changing and improving, meaning results from studies such as this one can vary over time. Among the platforms tested, Product AI ranked Gemini last. Claude finished third, followed by ChatGPT in second place. "Gemini, over half of the questions and shopping-related questions that we asked did have some sort of costly error for consumers," Nunley said, adding that the finding applied "on both the free and paid tiers." Perplexity was identified as the top performer. Regarding Perplexity's performance, Nunley said, "In our findings, we didn't find that perplexity. At this moment was the best choice for consumers." Google, which owns Gemini, disputed the study's relevance to consumers, telling Action News that Product AI did not evaluate the Gemini consumer app and instead used Gemini software designed for developers. According to Google, "The Gemini app includes everyday user features... including shopping experiences powered by billions of continually-refreshed product listings." Users should also note that Perplexity differs from other platforms because it uses AI to actively search the internet and other AI models before providing information to consumers. For shoppers looking for products on Amazon, keep in mind that Amazon uses AI shopping assistant, Rufus, for Amazon product and pricing information. Amazon has blocked other AI bots from searching its marketplace. TikTok also recently launched its own AI shopping tool, adding to a growing number of AI-powered shopping options available to consumers.

Perplexity AI releases pplx-embed-v2-late: A 0.6B edge model and a 9B model scoring 92.4% on MADQA.

Perplexity AI releases pplx-embed-v2-late: A 0.6B edge model and a 9B model scoring 92.4% on MADQA. October 7, 2026 Perplexity has released pplx-embed-v2-late, a pair of ColBERT-style multimodal embedding models. They come in 2 sizes: 0.6B for fast, cheap queries and 9B for maximum quality. Both models retrieve text, images and rendered PDF pages, and they share one embedding space. Is it deployable? Yes, if you host it yourself. Both models are on Hugging Face under the MIT license. A hosted Perplexity API endpoint is planned but not live. Tl;dr. The best. * The 0.6B model uses about 340M active parameters for images and stays close to 8B rivals. * A 9B index can be searched with 0.6B queries, recovering about half the 9B quality gap on text at 0.6B query cost. * Its 128-dim token vectors are 16x to 32x narrower than rivals at 2,048 to 4,096 dims. * MIT license, with commercial use allowed. The worst. * It stores 1 vector per token, so index size grows with document length. * It is not #1 on ViDoRe v3 image retrieval; Tencent's EVIE scores higher. * A single input cannot mix text and images. * All scores are self-reported, and the technical report is not out yet. Model size and what it runs on. Perplexity designed the 0.6B model as a lightweight query encoder that can also run on edge devices. Both model cards show CUDA GPU usage. They need sentence-transformers >= 6.0.0 and transformers >= 5.4.0. The memory figures are its estimate at 2 bytes per parameter, for weights only. The published checkpoints are stored in F32, which doubles the download size. How well it performs: best and worst scores. All numbers below are from Perplexity's announcement: The strongest result: 92.4% on MADQA, set by the 9B model. The biggest margin is on BrowseComp+, at 8.7pp over the best dense model. The weakest result: 61.2% on ViDoRe v3 Markdown, from the 0.6B model. It is still the 2nd-best score on that benchmark. Image search is the real gap: Gemini Embedding 2 beats the 9B model on MIRACL-Vision and by 2pp on PPLX-Q2I. Mixing sizes: a 9B index queried by the 0.6B model scored 63.5% on ViDoRe v3 image retrieval. That beats 62.3% with 0.6B on both sides, at the same query cost. How it works. Dense models compress a document into 1 vector. pplx-embed-v2-late instead keeps a 128-dim vector for every token. It scores with MaxSim: each query token finds its best document token, and those maxima are summed. Pages are encoded as images, so no OCR step is needed. Perplexity distilled both models from an 18B teacher using LEAF-style token-level training. That training is what creates the shared space. Best use cases. * The best fit is visual document search over PDFs, slides and scanned reports. * Low-latency search: index in the cloud with 9B, then query on-device with 0.6B. * Agentic RAG over large PDF or web collections. Interactive explainer. How it compares. Key takeaways. * The 0.6B model fits edge devices; the 9B model is built for index-time quality. * Best score: 92.4% on MADQA. Weakest: 61.2% on ViDoRe v3 Markdown. * 0.6B queries over a 9B index beat 0.6B on both sides. * Storage growth and self-reported scores are the main caveats.
