Leftover cider apples could end up in our car seats.

Leftover cider apples could end up in its car seats. October 17, 2026 Imagine stepping aboard your next electric car and discovering that its seats come from a cider press. Today, automakers are increasingly testing recycled materials for the cabin, especially in battery-powered models. The objective is simple to grasp: make the interior more sustainable by trimming animal leather and plastics derived from oil. Organic waste is becoming just another feedstock. And now apple leftovers are seriously catching the attention of equipment suppliers. Because behind the plush leather that still outfits many sedans lies a heavy material reality. An entire Rolls-Royce interior would require the hides of 8 to 18 bulls, a figure that makes you pause and think. To soften that image, premium manufacturers are already ramping up synthetic leathers. In response, players like Magna are already working on a apple leather for car seats. This path could very well end up under your behind sooner than you think. Why the automotive industry is looking at apple leather for its seats. In technical specs, the emphasis is on engines and batteries. In marketing, another battle is being waged: making the cabin more virtuous without sacrificing the premium image. Electric brands already promote fabrics sourced from fishing nets or plastics recovered from the sea. Leather remains a symbol. The industry is seeking a credible alternative to keep this look without bearing the full environmental cost. Meanwhile, interiors are being clothed in synthetic leathers that promise a lighter footprint. To the eye, the result looks like a fine grain leather, with its wrinkles and sheen. In reality, the outer layer that imitates grain is a plastic film with a skin pattern simply printed on it. For manufacturers, the ideal would therefore be a leather-like material that is largely bio-based. It must stay compatible with the demands of a modern automotive seat. How apple waste becomes a coating for car seats. That's where the tons of by-products from juice and cider production come into play. When an apple goes to the press, only part ends up in the bottle. Specialists estimate that between 25 and 30% of the fruit remains in the form of pulp, often treated as waste. Globally, these volumes represent about 4 million tonnes of apple waste per year. It's a treasure trove that sparks ideas. The star material of the moment is called Leap, developed in Denmark from these apple leftovers. It exceeds 85% biobased content, with certain formulations going even higher depending on the maker. Technically, it's organized into three layers that work in concert: * A water-based polyurethane topcoat, partially biobased, which provides color, texture and durability. * Below, a mix of dried apple pulp, about 1.8 kg per square meter. It's combined with natural rubber and other plant-based ingredients. * Finally, a textile backing made from TENCEL Lyocell fibers or 100% recycled polyester. It provides the mechanical strength and the elasticity required. In the end, you get a roll 1.4 meters wide, produced today in Germany. The current capacity is around 100,000 linear meters per year. The upholstery-grade Leap withstands more than 100,000 Martindale cycles. That level approaches the demands of a car seat or heavily used furniture. In use, Leap is marketed at the price of premium leather. It would claim up to 99% less water per square meter. The data also point to nearly 85% less CO2 compared with traditional leather. There remains some polyurethane and sometimes polyester. Car Revs Daily is not talking about an entirely plant-based material, but the overall footprint already scales differently. Magna, Leap et AppleSkin: qui prépare nos futurs sièges en cuir de pomme? On the supplier side, Magna has unveiled a new surface coating for seats drawn from the apple juice industry. The idea is to use biologically derived and recycled materials, drawing on by-products from apple processing. The company says this material offers wear and weather resistance compatible with a seat. Colors, texture, and perforations remain customizable to fit each OEM's design language. The result aims to look and feel like traditional leather. Compared with animal hide, Magna claims better yield at cutting, though no figures have been published. This project adds to a catalog already rich in recycled PET plastics and polyurethane foams containing up to 20% renewable content. Magna also offers monomaterial covers, easier to separate at end of life. However, the supplier has not yet named the automaker that will adopt it, the model it will go into, or the timeline. No specifics are given at this time. It isn't the first time apples show up in the world of vegetable leathers. As far back as 2019, Covestro and the startup then known as Beyond Leather Materials introduced Leap as a biological alternative to leather. It is made largely from biomaterials derived from apple by-products after juice and cider production. The AppleSkin material, meanwhile, is manufactured in Italy from at least 50% apple fibers combined with polyurethane. It has already appeared on the seats of the concept Volkswagen ID Roomzz and on other electric prototypes from the brand. For now, these apple leathers remain confined to fashion, furniture, or show cars. No brand has yet announced broad serial availability across a full model lineup. Neither Magna nor the other players provide detailed figures on apple content, durability, or cost. So many questions remain as you configure the upholstery of your next car. Magna develops leather alternative made with apples and recycled materials for car seats.

Magna develops leather alternative made with apples and recycled materials for car seats. Car interiors could become more sustainable thanks to a new seating material developed using bio-based... Car interiors could become more sustainable thanks to a new seating material developed using bio-based ingredients including apple by-products alongside recycled content. Automotive technology supplier Magna has unveiled a next-generation seating surface designed to offer the premium appearance and feel associated with traditional leather while meeting the demanding durability requirements of modern vehicles. The new material has been developed specifically for automotive seats and could give manufacturers another option as they look to increase the proportion of recycled and bio-based materials used in new cars. Importantly for drivers and manufacturers, Magna says the material has been engineered to deliver more than environmental benefits. It has been designed to withstand the wear, temperature changes and demanding everyday conditions experienced by vehicle interiors. Designed to look and feel like leather. Magna says its new seating surface can closely replicate the appearance and feel of traditional leather while offering manufacturers considerable freedom over interior design. A broad selection of colours, grains and perforation patterns can be produced, allowing individual car manufacturers to tailor the material to different models and interior specifications. The company has also focused on visual consistency and wear resistance, helping the material maintain the premium appearance expected in higher-specification vehicle interiors. One of the more unusual ingredients is material derived from apple by-products, which forms part of the bio-based content used alongside recycled materials. However, developing a sustainable material that looks attractive is only part of the challenge. Any alternative destined for mass-produced cars must also be practical to manufacture on a large scale. Magna says its new material has therefore been designed to work within existing automotive seating production environments, helping manufacturers integrate it without requiring completely new production processes. There could also be manufacturing efficiencies compared with natural leather. According to Magna, the more consistent nature of the material has the potential to improve cutting utilisation and, in certain production configurations, increase cutting yield. This could help manufacturers reduce the amount of material wasted when producing seat covers. Kristof Kurzeja, Director of Advanced Engineering at Magna Seating, said: "Materials incorporating alternative feedstocks are viable for vehicle programs only when they meet the required performance and production criteria. "Our focus is on developing materials that incorporate bio-based or recycled inputs while meeting automotive application requirements." Part of Magna's EcoSphere seating strategy. The new material forms part of Magna's wider EcoSphere seating portfolio, which explores ways of increasing recycled, bio-based and alternative materials within vehicle interiors. Other developments include seating incorporating recycled foams and mono-material seat cover concepts. The latter are intended to make different materials easier to separate when a vehicle reaches the end of its useful life. Magna is also working on lightweight seat structures and designs intended to reduce the quantity of raw material required during manufacturing. Taken together, the technologies are designed to help vehicle manufacturers meet targets around recycled content, material efficiency and vehicle weight while maintaining the comfort, appearance and durability motorists expect. The development also illustrates how the move towards more sustainable cars is extending beyond engines and batteries. As manufacturers examine the environmental impact of the entire vehicle, materials used for seats, dashboards, carpets, trim and other interior components are increasingly becoming another area for innovation. Magna's apple-based and recycled seating surface could ultimately give manufacturers another way of creating premium-looking interiors without relying solely on traditional leather.
