Requirements
  • Registration in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse.
  • Certification in Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing from the Canadian Nurses Association.
  • Knowledge of the College of Nurses Professional Standards of Practice and Standards of Psychiatric/Mental Health Clinical Nursing Practice.
  • Three to five years of recent experience in acute mental health.
  • Current experience in medicine and geriatric fields.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Mental Health Act.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification.
  • Crisis Prevention Institute certificate or equivalent.
  • Ability to coordinate patient care involving the client, family, other disciplines, and collateral agencies.
  • Knowledge of the psychiatric needs of medically ill patients.
  • Patient assessment skills for patients with delirium and dementia diagnoses.
  • Risk assessment skills, including suicide and self-harm risks.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a diverse multidisciplinary health care team.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workload.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Teaching and educating experience.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to perform the necessary bona fide duties of the position and the duties outlined in the Job Demands Analysis.
Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with and support staff in non-mental-health areas of the hospital in the care and treatment of patients with behavioural, psychiatric, or mental health concerns.
  • Coordinate patient care involving clients, families, other disciplines, and collateral agencies.
  • Assess patients with delirium and dementia diagnoses.
  • Conduct risk assessments, including assessments of suicide and self-harm risks.
  • Provide teaching and education.
  • Work safely and promote health and safety in the workplace in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and organizational policies and procedures.
