UHS fair value estimate cut to $189.94 from $194.35 as analysts split on 2026 outlook

Analysts have trimmed their fair value estimate for Universal Health Services (UHS) to $189.94 a share, down from $194.35. The change follows a tough third quarter, lower 2026 earnings guidance, and about $200 million in one-off items, including the decertification of a San Antonio behavioural facility by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Softer elective surgery demand across the hospital sector also weighs on the stock. BofA cut its price target after an EBITDA miss. RBC Capital and Baird also trimmed theirs, though RBC says underlying volume trends remain healthy. Guggenheim sees the lower guidance as a possible reset that could support cleaner execution in the fourth quarter.

UHS Q3 adjusted EPS falls 8% to $5.22 as new hospitals ramp slowly, guidance held

Universal Health Services (UHS) reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $5.22, down 8% from a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA less noncontrolling interests fell to $625 million from $671 million. Chief financial officer Steve Filton blamed slower ramp-ups at new hospitals and weaker surgical trends. UHS kept its full-year outlook but expects results near the lower end. Same-facility acute-care admissions rose 4.9%, while surgeries fell 0.7%. Cedar Hill's break-even target moved to the first half of 2027. UHS expects combined 2026 losses of $80 million to $100 million from new facilities and Laurel Ridge. It also sees a potential 2027 headwind of $175 million to $200 million from Medicaid supplemental-payment cuts.

Universal Health Services slips 3% despite Q3 beat as $26M settlement charge weighs

Universal Health Services (NYSE: UHS) shares fell 3% in after-hours trading on Tuesday, as legal settlement costs and Medicaid payment uncertainty overshadowed a slight third-quarter earnings beat. The hospital operator posted adjusted earnings per share of $5.22, against analyst consensus of $5.20. Revenue rose 5.3% year on year to $4.73 billion, ahead of the $4.71 billion estimate. The quarter included a $26 million charge to raise reserves for a tentative settlement in the Cumberland Hospital litigation. That was offset by a net favourable $21 million pre-tax impact from Medicaid supplemental payment programmes. Operating cash flow for the first nine months rose 14.9% to $1.48 billion. The company bought back 1.35 million shares in the quarter for $242.1 million.
