Berkshire's third-largest holding Alphabet is 12.6% of portfolio, with 90% search share

Berkshire Hathaway has sharply increased its stake in Alphabet since Greg Abel replaced Warren Buffett as chief executive officer. Combined Class A and Class C shares now make up roughly 12.6% of Berkshire's portfolio, its third-largest position. Google holds about 90% of the search engine market, which underpins Alphabet's advertising business. eMarketer expects Meta Platforms to overtake Alphabet in digital ad revenue this year, with a 26.8% share against Alphabet's 26.4%. Amazon is projected at 9%. Alphabet's ad business is still forecast to grow about 12% in 2026. Google Cloud sales rose 82% year over year to $24.8 billion in the second quarter.

Buffett warns of a "gambling mood" in markets; Vertex, Eli Lilly and AbbVie built to weather a drop

Warren Buffett, now Berkshire Hathaway's chairman emeritus, gave his bluntest warning yet at the May shareholder meeting. "We've never had people in a more gambling mood than now," he told CNBC, pointing to individuals rushing into short-term options and betting on markets. He said this behaviour is risky for those taking part and may threaten the market, possibly leading to a drop. The article suggests drugmakers as defensive picks, since patients need treatments in any economy. Vertex Pharmaceuticals leads in cystic fibrosis treatment. Eli Lilly's tirzepatide drugs, Mounjaro and Zepbound, earned more than $14 billion of its $23 billion quarterly revenue. AbbVie's Rinvoq and Skyrizi each grew 24%, and it has raised its dividend for more than 50 consecutive years.

Berkshire adds $330M to Bending Spoons, now worth $30B, as it buys fallen software names

Berkshire Hathaway has put $330 million more into Bending Spoons, bringing its total investment in the Milan-based holding company to over $900 million. The stock jumped 41% on the news, leaving a market cap of about $30 billion after some later losses. Bending Spoons buys software firms that the AI boom has pushed aside. It agreed to buy Airtable for about $1.3 billion, almost 90% below its 2021 peak valuation, and Miro for $1.36 billion, down from $17.5 billion. Unlike private equity firms, it aims to keep the businesses and profit from them rather than sell. The approach brings job cuts and price rises. In August, it reported revenue of over $700 million and net income of $177 million.

Harbor insurance: $10M seed to insure the risks AI agents create.

Harbor insurance: $10M seed to insure the risks AI agents create. Traditional carriers are excluding AI from their policies. Harbor wants to measure the risk, block the bad decisions, and insure what remains. Tessa Vaughn Forkast mind | 2026-10-17 12:45 AM PDT Agents are taking over tasks traditionally done by humans, making payments, signing contracts, and handling sensitive customer data. But who pays if the agent makes a mistake? The rapid expansion of agentic commerce has outpaced the legal and financial frameworks designed to govern corporate liability. As autonomous systems begin to execute transactions, manage assets, and interact with third parties, the traditional insurance industry has retreated. Major carriers, including Berkshire Hathaway, Chubb, and Travelers, have introduced generative AI exclusion endorsements - such as CG 40 47, CG 40 48, and CG 35 08 - effectively ending the era of "silent AI" coverage. This leaves enterprises exposed to losses from hallucinations, flawed reasoning, and unauthorized autonomous actions that fall outside the triggers of standard cyber or technology errors and omissions policies. Harbor, which emerged from stealth on October 13, 2026, with a $10 million seed round led by Base10 Partners, Abstract Ventures, and 8VC, is attempting to bridge this gap. The company proposes a four-step operational process: inventorying every AI agent, measuring risk against frameworks like the NIST AI RMF and the EU AI Act, implementing technical controls, and insuring the residual risk using its own capital. Harbor's coverage targets specific perils, including hallucinations, action errors, and IP infringement. Regulators are forcing the issue. The European Central Bank, via letter SSM-2026-0301, has mandated that EU banks submit comprehensive action plans for AI-enabled cybersecurity threats by October 31, 2026. Failure to comply may impact capital requirements under the Supervisory Review and Evaluation Process (SREP). As Jesús Santos, one of four founders who met at Stanford University, noted in the Insurance Journal: "Companies need to understand the risk of their agents, and at the current pace of adoption and development, assessing the risk at a specific point in time seems useless. There is a need for an innovative solution for managing the risk in real time." Harbor's entry follows a series of developments previously documented by Forkast, including the Chain of Trust regarding agent identity, Credential Convergence concerning payment liability, and the Agent Monetization Shift in pricing architectures. While Harbor positions itself as the insurance layer following detection tools like Cequence's Agent Trust, the market faces a significant scale mismatch. Current standalone AI insurance capacity, provided by entities like Munich Re/aiSure and Armilla AI, is generally capped between $15 million and $25 million per organization. This is a fraction of the potential litigation exposure, which could reach into the billions.

Can Alphabet help Greg Abel keep Berkshire's 19.7% annual streak alive?

Berkshire Hathaway returned 19.7% a year from 1965 through the end of 2025 under Warren Buffett, against an average 10.5% for the S&P 500. Greg Abel, previously vice chairman of non-insurance operations, has now taken over as chief executive officer. Alphabet could help Abel keep the streak alive. Berkshire disclosed the stake in the third quarter of 2025, and it is now the conglomerate's third largest holding at 3.4% of its market capitalisation. Alphabet shares have risen 49% in the past 12 months, yet trade at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 22.8. Challenges remain. Berkshire's size has held back returns, with shares up 260% over the past decade, lagging the market. Its $359 billion cash pile may also be a drag, and Alphabet's $200 billion capital spending plan for 2026 adds risk.
