Requirements
  • Work outdoors while traversing steep, rugged, and uneven terrain in all weather conditions.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and successfully complete a motor vehicle records check and standard background checks.
  • Have forest measurement skills and plant and tree identification skills.
Responsibilities
  • Use basic surveying techniques, aerial photographs, topographic and timber stand maps, a compass, and GPS to conduct field work.
  • Identify, measure, and record ground flora vegetation variables, including species, percent cover, and stem count.
  • Accurately identify tree, shrub, vine, grass, and herbaceous plant species.
  • Measure crown dimensions of crop trees and the size of gap openings in experimental treatments.
  • Photo-document plots with a digital camera and download and label photographs.
  • Measure the condition, diameter, and dimensions of downed woody debris.
  • Transfer all data according to documented procedures.
  • Collect and compile GPS data.
  • Organize hard-copy and digital field data records.
  • Communicate with other field, research, and supervisory staff.
  • Travel daily to field sites and occasionally stay overnight for field work.
Desired Qualifications
  • Complete or pursue college-level coursework or a degree in wildlife, forestry, natural resource management, environmental science, biology, or a closely related field.
