About the job

Requirements
  • A B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline, with 0–5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong C/C++ skills and familiarity with assembly-level debugging and optimization.
  • A strong foundation in linear algebra and digital signal processing, including filters and transforms.
  • Experience drafting technical documentation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel, with occasional periods up to 20% depending on project phase.
  • Must qualify as a U.S. Person.
Responsibilities
  • Develop and maintain real-time embedded C/C++ code, including core components of the acoustic modem firmware, owning features from concept through deployment.
  • Implement, optimize, and validate advanced acoustic signal-processing algorithms.
  • Collaborate with electrical, mechanical, systems, and field teams to define interfaces and verify system performance.
  • Develop tests, tools, and procedures for firmware validation, hardware bring-up, production testing, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies and research in relevant fields to inform engineering and design decisions.
  • Help improve engineering culture, communication, and technical standards as the team grows.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience deploying digital signal processing and/or machine-learning algorithms on resource-constrained embedded platforms.
  • Familiarity with FPGA development and hardware description languages such as VHDL.
  • Experience with analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits, such as low-noise amplifiers, analog-to-digital converters, and analog front ends.
  • Familiarity with sonar and/or undersea technology.

About the company

OceanComm develops high-speed wireless underwater communication systems using acoustic-modem technology to move data through seawater. Its main product, an ultrasound-based modem, connects to existing Ethernet networks to enable tetherless control of underwater vehicles and real-time data, including video, from subsea environments. The company stands out by using patented signal-processing algorithms that achieve 100–1,000 times higher data rates in the underwater setting and by serving defense, offshore energy, and oceanographic research clients with ready-to-use networking capabilities. OceanComm’s goal is to help offshore operators reduce costs by providing real-time data access, video streaming, and remote control of subsea assets.

What believers are saying

  • OceanComm posted five R&D openings in August 2026, signaling active product expansion.
  • HigherGov shows a new April 2026 federal award, confirming continuing government demand.
  • LinkedIn and website updates in September 2026 show customer-facing momentum and live market visibility.

What critics are saying

  • Hydromea and Equinor demonstrated seabed-to-cloud wireless broadband in March 2026.
  • OceanComm still depends on federal SBIR and small Navy purchase orders, limiting revenue diversification.
  • If optical subsea networking wins defense and energy buyers, OceanComm's acoustic niche shrinks fast.

What makes OceanComm unique

  • OceanComm claims 400 kbps underwater links and 7 km range on custom models.
  • Singer and Riedl still anchor patented acoustic modem expertise from Illinois and Navy work.
  • Its Ethernet-compatible, software-defined modem differentiates against bespoke subsea integration projects.

U.S. Navy Standardizes On Videoray Defender With Large 2022 Order

Greensea and Seebyte Autonomous VideoRay Defender ROV System The Navy has praised VideoRay for the ease with which systems can be repaired in the field. All the components of a Defender ROV are modular and are designed to be easily swapped out by warfighters in the field. VideoRay, LLC, today announced a large and diverse order for its Defender remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) by the U.S. Navy. The Navy is standardizing on VideoRay Defender Mission Specialist systems due to superior capabilities, flexibility and upgradability of the large number of systems deployed since 2019. VideoRay’s customer support of the Navy includes training facilities and staffing on the East Coast in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and the West Coast in San Diego
