Requirements
- Graduate of an approved and accredited professional Physical Therapy school or program.
- Hold a California Physical Therapist license issued by the California Physical Therapy Board.
- Hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professionals certification.
- For therapists functioning in a CCS-designated NICU, CCS paneling is required within six months of hire.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate, plan, direct, and administer physician-prescribed physical therapy modalities of treatment.
- Assist patients in reaching their maximum performance and level of functioning while learning to live within the limits of their capabilities.
- Participate in operational aspects of the department and maintain departmental performance improvement activities, including continuous quality improvement activities.
- Participate in departmental goals and the advancement of department initiatives.
- Collaborate with leadership on clinical and operational projects.
- Participate in departmental activities, including continuous quality improvement activities, staff meetings, and chart review.
- Participate in committees and system-wide activities when requested as a departmental representative.
- Complete documentation in a timely, complete, legible, concise, and accurate manner, following healthcare, professional, third-party payor, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain records pertinent to departmental operations and complete applicable documentation, including interdisciplinary plans of care, education records, billing, and discharge plans.
- Communicate patient-care and departmental issues, adapt to changes in schedules and assignments, complete additional assignments, and suggest solutions to operational issues.
- Provide unit-specific information to students, floats, and temporary registry personnel.
- Maintain departmental cleanliness and safety, set priorities, adjust to unscheduled situations, use time effectively, complete regulatory requirements, and meet department productivity standards.
- Evaluate and treat patients within the scope of care in a cost-effective manner appropriate to each patient's diagnosis, age, and culture.
- Assess patient pain that interferes with optimal function or rehabilitation participation and provide intervention.
- Perform appropriate assessments related to requested therapy and provide and reassess care according to policy.
- Evaluate patient outcomes and the effectiveness of patient-care measures, reporting significant changes or abnormal findings to management or a physician.
- Use interdisciplinary team conferences to communicate patient-related problems and initiate discussions with team members when needed to support comprehensive care and problem-solving.
- Provide patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of healthcare errors.
- Develop teaching plans based on identified learning needs, evaluate learning effectiveness, and include family in teaching as appropriate.
- Demonstrate safe and knowledgeable use of modalities, equipment, and therapeutic procedures.
- Coordinate and direct patient care to ensure patient needs are met and hospital policy is followed.
- Complete a development plan and maintain satisfactory performance.
- Participate in weekly team and discharge meetings, interdisciplinary rounds, staffing, and patient conferences as required; NICU therapists attend weekly NICU rounds when applicable.
- Collaborate with the Case Manager on referrals and transitions of therapy needs to local CCS Medical Therapy Programs or Units for infants being discharged.
- For CCS-paneled therapists, recommend appropriate outpatient services and, with a physician order, assist with referrals to outpatient therapy at CCS Medical Therapy Units or other facilities.
