TKDA launches new Mining Division to expand industry expertise.

TKDA launches new Mining Division to expand industry expertise. Since 1910, TKDA has supported the industries and infrastructure that move natural resources to communities and markets. Building on that legacy, TKDA has developed a new Mining Division, expanding its investment in the people and specialized expertise that help mining clients solve complex operational, technical, and business challenges. This new division strengthens an established area of TKDA's business at a time when demand for mining and critical minerals expertise continues to grow. Its team currently supports mining operations across the United States and Canada, providing design solutions for projects that include systems for transloading, transportation, and material handling and processing. "Creating this division represents our commitment to meet the growing needs of mining industry clients," said TKDA President and CEO Jeff Lipovetz. "We have talented people with firsthand experience working in active mining operations. They know how to develop solutions grounded in how mining facilities operate. This investment will build on that strong foundation by expanding our team and strengthening our specialized services for mining clients at multiple stages of their operations." TKDA's approach combines direct mining operations experience with the much wider breadth of technical knowledge available across the firm. Engineers, architects, planners, and specialized experts can draw on in-house capabilities essential to successful mining operations, including rail and facility design, to build a team with the varied skills and insights needed to help clients overcome any technical barriers they may encounter. With offices and staff in major mining regions across the Upper Midwest, Pacific Northwest, and American Southwest, TKDA is well-positioned to support clients nationwide. As part of launching the new Mining Division, TKDA also promoted Brian "Bud" Mickelson to Mining Vice President. In this role, Bud will oversee the growth of TKDA's mining services portfolio. He brings more than 20 years of experience across the mining, manufacturing, power, and steel industries. Prior to joining TKDA in 2015, he worked at Magnetation and Cleveland-Cliffs, actively supporting plant operations for both organizations. "I've been around mining my whole life, and my roles at TKDA have allowed me to continue working and living in mining communities," Bud said. "Our new Mining Division is TKDA's commitment to supporting the industry and the regions that depend on it." Let's Build What's Next Together Every successful project starts with a conversation. Tell TKDA about your goals, challenges, and priorities, and TKDA'll help identify the best path forward.

TKDA's Bloomington office recognized for sustainable design.

TKDA's Bloomington office recognized for sustainable design. TKDA's Bloomington office remodel embodies its ambition and shared values, and Tkda is excited to announce that this collaborative project received the Green / LEED Development Project of the Year at the 2026 Minnesota Real Estate Awards. Presented by REjournals, this award recognizes projects that demonstrate leadership in sustainable design and energy efficiency. This recognition reinforces the value of investing in spaces that support environmental responsibility and the people who use them every day. As an employee-owned firm, stewardship is the foundation of what Tkda do. Whether designing infrastructure for its communities, helping businesses and industries thrive, or shaping its own workspace, its work focuses on long-term performance and resiliency. This project was driven by a commitment to create a healthier, more sustainable workplace for its employees. From thoughtful material selection and improved building performance to spaces that maximize daylight and support employee well-being, this remodel reflects how sustainable and people-centered design work together. Initial choices about where to relocate set its project up for success by considering surrounding density, diverse zoning uses, and access to public transportation. The office also features over 100 thermostats, digital HVAC controls, and system-wide enhanced commissioning that optimize comfort and energy usage throughout various work environments. Additionally, efforts to reduce water usage and the inclusion of added occupancy sensors automatically manage its water consumption and lighting based on how spaces are used, helping Tkda do its part to reduce wasteful water and energy usage. The incorporation of key LEED innovation and pilot credits soliciting Occupant Comfort feedback and implementing a Comprehensive Composting program also supported its goal to create a positive and conscientious office that its employee owners can be proud of. Tkda view its office as a reflection of its history, who Tkda is, and where Tkda is headed next. Tkda is proud to see its office receive this statewide recognition and are grateful to its internal teams and the following partners, who all played a significant role in bringing this vision to life. * PlanForce * Mission Construction * Parameters, Ltd. * iSpace Environments * Davis & Associates

TKDA Drives Resilient Design with a Microgrid-Enabled Maintenance Facility

TKDA is proud to partner with the City of Porterville to design a forward-looking maintenance facility that supports the City's transition to a zero-emission fleet. The new 25,000-SF facility is being thoughtfully planned to meet the City's operational needs, including maintenance bays, parking, office areas, and breakrooms, while providing the flexibility to service both traditional and electric vehicles during the City's phased conversion to a zero-emission fleet by 2040. To enhance resilience and support the City's long-term sustainability goals, the facility will be connected to the City's microgrid. A microgrid is a localized energy system capable of generating, storing, and distributing electricity independently or while tied to the main utility grid. Microgrids are increasingly used to improve sustainability, manage energy costs, support electrification, and advance decarbonization initiatives. While microgrids often help manage peak loads, this facility's connection is being driven primarily by the need for operational continuity. During storms, natural disasters, grid failures, or brownouts, the microgrid will provide uninterrupted power by utilizing multiple potential energy sources, such as photovoltaics, battery storage, combined heat and power, or generator systems. This will allow essential operations at the maintenance facility to continue even when the broader grid is under stress, reflecting citywide efforts to strengthen resilience against energy disruptions. TKDA helps cities like Porterville lead the advancement of energy-resilient and sustainable infrastructure. Through innovative facility design and strategic energy integration, Tkda is committed to delivering solutions that support its clients' sustainability, electrification, and long-term operational goals.

TKDA Projects Earn Two Awards at ACEC/MN Banquet

TKDA projects earn two awards at ACEC/MN banquet. TKDA is proud to announce two aviation projects were recognized at the American Council of Engineering Companies of Minnesota's Engineering Excellence Banquet. This annual banquet recognizes engineering firms and their clients on successful projects that provide value to the community while demonstrating a high level of creativity and innovation. Both awards highlight our commitment to delivering safe and efficient infrastructure that strengthens Minnesota's aviation system. From major commercial hubs to regional airports, we provide resilient aviation planning and design solutions. Runway 12L-30R Reconstruction wins Grand Award. The Runway 12L-30R Reconstruction at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport received a Grand Award. When water did not drain properly and ponded at the intersection of Runways 12L-30R and 4-22, there was a significant aircraft safety concern at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. To address the poor friction and drainage conditions, we collaborated with the Metropolitan Airports Commission on a full reconstruction of the intersection. Closing Runway 12L-30R doesn't occur often, so the design team completed several maintenance projects during the closure. Overall, the project adopted an aggressive schedule limited to 16 weeks to minimize airport impacts during certain weather conditions, requiring the contractors to work long hours and weekends. Considerable collaboration, precise design, and diligent construction management helped maintain ongoing airport operations and complete this project to foster a safer condition for passengers. Snow Removal Equipment Building wins Honor Award. We also received an Honor Award for our design of the Snow Removal Equipment Building at the Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport in Marshall, Minnesota. After completing a Master Plan for Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport, the City of Marshall identified a location for future terminal area development. The first project was a 7,500-SF snow removal equipment facility to store snow removal and lawn care equipment and raw materials, which is essential to maintaining runways and airport property. TKDA provided comprehensive planning, design, and construction phase services for the facility, featuring three vehicle/equipment bays, office and breakroom spaces, restrooms, mechanical and electrical rooms, and a storage mezzanine to maximize the use of interior space. By collaborating with City officials, the Airport Commission, and the FAA, TKDA prepared a funding plan outlining the funding source proportions and allocations. This facility marks a major investment in safety, efficiency, and growth for the region.
