Requirements
- Nurse Practitioner candidates must be graduates of a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
- Nurse Practitioner candidates must hold national certification by one of the recognized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Certification Centers.
- Nurse Practitioner candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
- Nurse Practitioner candidates must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Physician Assistant candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree or master’s degree as a Physician Assistant.
- Physician Assistant candidates must graduate from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant-approved Physician Assistant training program.
- Physician Assistant candidates must hold certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
- Physician Assistant candidates must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the West Virginia Board of Medicine or West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
- Physician Assistant candidates must hold American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification, with additional Advanced Life Support training at the department’s discretion.
- Candidates must demonstrate proficiency with computers.
- Candidates must have strong communication skills.
- Candidates must be able to lift, move, stoop, reach, position, stand, walk, and carry patients, materials, and equipment weighing 40 or more pounds.
- Candidates must be able to work closely with others, work protracted or irregular hours, and work around biohazards, infectious diseases, deceased persons, water, and electrical hazards associated with patient-care equipment.
Responsibilities
- Manage comprehensive and individualized care for gastroenterology and hepatology patients and their families immediately after discharge and in the ambulatory setting.
- Complete consults and pre-procedure evaluations.
- Complete integrated assessments and comprehensive medication reviews for disposition of gastroenterology and hepatology patients.
- Order additional tests or consults in collaboration with gastroenterology and hepatology faculty or according to established clinical guidelines and protocols.
- Perform diagnostic tests and communicate their results according to established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
- Consult and communicate with clinic and hospital staff about abnormal patient-evaluation findings.
- Perform comprehensive clinical evaluations and document findings in the medical record.
- Facilitate patient disposition by coordinating services and tests for follow-up clinic appointments or necessary care arrangements.
- Develop individualized plans of care, including teaching, disposition planning, and referrals to other healthcare-team members.
- Care for patients across the age continuum within the scope of educational experience and certification.
- Identify unstable or complex gastroenterology and hepatology patient-care situations and facilitate appropriate intervention in the clinic setting.
- Recognize emergency situations and initiate effective emergency care.
- Evaluate gastroenterology and hepatology patients and coordinate follow-up in the ambulatory setting or longitudinal-care facility.
- Assist with collection of outcome measures.
- Use critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning to identify, evaluate, and manage patients’ and families’ gastroenterology and hepatology needs.
- Use equipment safely.
- Base decisions and actions on scientific principles, standards of care, and research findings.
- Provide education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community using appropriate teaching and learning strategies.
- Promote an environment that supports learning by responding to patient and family preferences, priorities, and readiness to learn.
- Maintain and update professional knowledge throughout the year.
- Complete all identified clinical competencies.
- Serve as a resource for staff caring for gastroenterology and hepatology patients.
- Provide educational programs to professional and paraprofessional personnel within the area of expertise.
- Participate in community programs and distribute relevant literature.
- Document the plan of care, interventions, evaluations, and disposition plans clearly and concisely in each patient’s medical record according to approved hospital policies and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with leaders and staff to achieve patient-outcome improvements in gastroenterology and hepatology.
- Provide leadership in developing and implementing changes in gastroenterology and hepatology practice that positively affect patient outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with medical and nursing staff to facilitate problem solving and provide professional support.
- Participate in and initiate interdisciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education, and serve as a professional role model.
- Promote innovation in the expanded role of care delivery to gastroenterology and hepatology patients and families during inpatient hospitalization, in ambulatory settings, and in longitudinal facilities.
- Participate in and provide leadership for committees and task forces.
- Document hours and submit billing reports as appropriate.
- Review and interpret hepatology data from patient registries, clinical and financial reports, length of stay, access to care, and cost-per-case reports, and recommend or implement changes as necessary.
- Participate in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
- Assist hepatology faculty, administrators, and directors with collecting outcome measures.
- Perform other assigned duties and projects.
Desired Qualifications
- Internal Medicine, gastroenterology, or hepatology experience is preferred.
- Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner certification is preferred.
- A master’s-level degree as a Physician Assistant is preferred.
