About the company

Rivian designs and builds electric pickup trucks, SUVs, and delivery vans, pairing off-road ability with electronics and software it develops itself. In 2021, its R1T became the first fully electric pickup truck on the US consumer market, ahead of larger rivals such as Ford and Tesla. It makes the R1T pickup, the R1S and R2 SUVs, and commercial vans in Normal, Illinois, and sells them directly online and in its own stores rather than through dealers. Its vehicles run on Rivian's own software, which gains features through updates sent over the internet, and most revenue comes from vehicle sales, with service and optional software adding more. Rivian was founded in 2009 and is based in Irvine, California.

What believers are saying

  • R2 is lifting sales: deliveries hit a record 19,248 in the September 2026 quarter, up 46% from a year earlier.
  • Uber backs Rivian's self-driving push: it pledged up to $1.25 billion in March 2026 and will buy 10,000 R2 robotaxis.
  • Room to grow: Rivian's $5 billion Georgia factory, set to start building cars in 2028, plans 7,500 permanent jobs.

What critics are saying

  • Losses still run deep: Rivian lost $837 million from April to June 2026, and its car sales lost money.
  • Layoffs keep coming: Rivian cut about 600 jobs in October 2025 and hundreds in June 2026, mostly sales and service.
  • Stock grants have shrunk: Rivian shares fell 27% from January to October 2026, versus Tesla's 17% drop.

What makes Rivian unique

  • Volkswagen buys its tech: joint-venture work for VW, Rivian's largest owner, brought in $308 million in the June 2026 quarter.
  • Amazon is its anchor customer: it ordered 100,000 custom Rivian delivery vans, and over 40,000 ran its routes by mid-2026.
  • Unlike Tesla, Rivian adds lidar: in December 2025 it unveiled its own RAP1 self-driving chip and laser sensors for R2.

Rivian shares jump 9% on UBS upgrade to Buy despite $80M automotive gross loss

Rivian shares rose 9% to $13.26 at 10:10 EDT on November 2 after UBS upgraded the electric-vehicle maker to Buy from Neutral. The bank kept its $17 price target. The company's October 29 results showed a split picture. Automotive revenue reached $1.550 billion, with an $80 million gross loss, a gross margin of negative 5.2%. Software and services earned $256 million in gross profit, lifting consolidated gross profit to $176 million. That segment includes Volkswagen joint-venture development work and repair income, so it does not prove an autonomy subscription breakthrough. Vehicle margins remain the key test as the R2 model scales. Rivian's Autonomy and AI Day in December could offer another catalyst.

Rivian's EDV van booms as Amazon sales hit $1.6B and rivals retreat

Rivian's commercial van is becoming a major revenue driver, as Amazon buys more of the electric delivery vehicles (EDVs). Amazon has paid Rivian $1.6 billion so far this year, nearly triple the previous year's amount, mostly for EDV sales. In the third quarter alone, it paid $596 million. Chief executive RJ Scaringe said Amazon is buying more vans because of their lower running costs. "It's creating true and very real structural cost advantages," he said. Rivian's rivals are retreating. Ford has sold fewer than 700 E-Transit vans this year, down 85%, and General Motors axed its BrightDrop vans. Rivian opened fleet orders to other firms last year, starting at $79,900. Scaringe said it is talking to other potential customers.

Rivian CEO says autonomy could drive "huge changes" in market share as Q3 revenue hits $2.155B

Rivian chief executive officer RJ Scaringe said autonomous driving could bring "huge changes in market share" in the car industry. Speaking on the third-quarter earnings call, he called autonomy an "inflection point" and said its cost could one day be "embedded into the price of the vehicle." Rivian's "Point to Point" supervised driving system, similar to Tesla's Full Self-Driving Supervised, is a step toward Level 4 capability planned for 2028. Software and services revenue hit $605 million, up 45% year on year, with 60% coming from its Volkswagen joint venture. Rivian expects a milestone by year-end that would unlock $250 million in equity investment from Uber, which agreed to invest $1.25 billion through 2031. Third-quarter revenue was $2.155 billion, beating the $1.984 billion forecast.

Could Rivian's R2 spark a Tesla Model 3-style turnaround? Tesla stock rose 1,364%

Rivian's new R2 could do for the company what the Model 3 did for Tesla, if it can build the vehicle efficiently. Tesla's Model 3 gross margin passed 20% in the third quarter of 2018, and its operating margin rose from 6.1% to 14.6% by the third quarter of 2021. Its split-adjusted stock climbed about 1,364% over that period. Early R2 demand looks strong. Rivian delivered 19,248 vehicles in the third quarter, up 46% year over year, and produced 19,751. The roughly $58,000 R2 Launch Edition converted reservations to orders at a higher rate than management expected. Chief executive officer RJ Scaringe said suppliers, not the factory, are limiting the ramp-up. Higher output could also improve the economics of the R1S, R1T, and Amazon vans, which share production shops with the R2. Launch costs will still weigh on third-quarter profitability, so fourth-quarter results may be a clearer guide.

Automakers expand 3D printing for parts and tools to cut costs and speed production.

Automakers expand 3D printing for parts and tools to cut costs and speed production. Market News 31 Oct 2026, 15:00 WIB Automakers like Ford, Rivian, and General Motors are increasingly using 3D printing beyond prototyping to produce factory tools and select vehicle parts. This additive manufacturing technology helps reduce costs, speeds up development and repair cycles, and supports low-volume production needs. Rivian has invested over $5 million in 3D printers and is making the technology widely accessible to employees, while Ford and GM use 3D printing to create custom tools and parts that keep production running efficiently. The trend highlights a shift toward more flexible, cost-effective manufacturing in the automotive industry. Rivian trades at USD 12.16 with a 6.20% gain, reflecting strong investor interest as of Oct 31, 2026 19:11 WIB. Ford is priced at USD 12.22, down 0.93%, with 90% of Pluang orders selling. General Motors stands at USD 87.40, up 1.96%, showing moderate buying activity on Pluang. These figures highlight varied market responses to automakers' innovation strategies.
